About The Leprosy Mission
The Leprosy Mission: Fighting Against Leprosy and Its Stigma
The Leprosy Mission is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly for over 150 years to eradicate leprosy and its stigma from the world. Founded in 1874, the organization has been providing medical care, rehabilitation, education, and advocacy services to people affected by leprosy in more than 30 countries.
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae bacteria that mainly affects the skin, nerves, and mucous membranes. It can cause disfigurement, disability, blindness, and social exclusion if left untreated. Although it is curable with multidrug therapy (MDT), many people still suffer from its physical and psychological consequences due to lack of awareness or access to healthcare.
The Leprosy Mission aims to change this situation by raising awareness about leprosy's causes, symptoms, treatment options as well as challenging the myths and prejudices associated with it. The organization also provides medical care through its hospitals and clinics where patients can receive diagnosis, treatment (including MDT), surgery if needed as well as physiotherapy or occupational therapy for their disabilities.
Moreover, The Leprosy Mission offers rehabilitation services such as vocational training programs that help people affected by leprosy regain their self-esteem and economic independence. These programs include skills development in agriculture, handicrafts making or computer literacy which enable them to start their own businesses or find employment opportunities.
In addition to these direct services for patients' benefit; The Leprosy Mission also advocates for policy changes at national and international levels that promote human rights protection of people affected by leprosy. This includes lobbying governments to eliminate discriminatory laws against them such as marriage restrictions or forced isolation policies based on outdated beliefs about contagion risks.
One of The Leprosy Mission's most significant achievements was contributing significantly towards reducing global prevalence rates of leprosy from around five million cases in the 1980s down to less than two hundred thousand cases today. However; despite this progress made so far; there are still challenges ahead such as reaching out remote areas where access healthcare remains limited due geographical barriers poverty among others factors.
To overcome these challenges; The Leprosy Mission relies on partnerships with other organizations governments communities individuals who share its vision of a world free from leprosy stigma discrimination. By working together towards common goals they can achieve greater impact results than working alone could ever do!
