The Charis Project: Empowering Families to Build Stronger Communities
The Charis Project is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering families and communities in Thailand. Their mission is to heal families, strengthen families, and keep them together. They believe that every child deserves a strong loving family, and they work tirelessly to make this a reality.
The Charis Project was founded in 2010 by Aaron and Candace Smalley. They were inspired by their own experiences as parents of three adopted children from Thailand. They saw firsthand the challenges faced by vulnerable children and families in the region, including poverty, lack of education, and social isolation.
To address these issues, The Charis Project has developed a holistic approach that focuses on four key areas: education, health care, community development, and family support. By working with local partners and volunteers, they are able to provide targeted interventions that meet the unique needs of each community.
One of the main programs offered by The Charis Project is their Family Support Program. This program provides resources such as food assistance, medical care referrals, counseling services for parents or caregivers who may be struggling with addiction or mental health issues related to trauma experienced during childhood abuse/neglect situations; educational opportunities for children who may have missed out on schooling due to poverty or other factors; vocational training for adults who need skills training so they can earn an income; legal aid services if needed (e.g., custody battles).
Another important initiative undertaken by The Charis Project is their Community Development Program which aims at building stronger communities through various activities like providing clean water sources or sanitation facilities where necessary; organizing events like sports tournaments or cultural festivals which bring people together across different age groups/backgrounds/ethnicities etc.; creating safe spaces where people can gather without fear of violence/harassment etc.; promoting environmental sustainability through tree planting campaigns etc.
In addition to these programs aimed at supporting vulnerable families directly, The Charis Project also works to raise awareness about the importance of family preservation and child protection. They do this through various advocacy campaigns, public speaking engagements, and media outreach efforts.
The Charis Project has been recognized for their outstanding work in the field of child welfare and community development. They have received numerous awards including the 2018 Thailand NGO Excellence Award from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.
