The Addict's Mom: A Support Group for Mothers of Addicted Children
The Addict's Mom is a support group that provides a safe and supportive community for mothers who have children struggling with addiction. Addiction is a complex and challenging issue that affects not only the individual but also their loved ones, especially their mothers. The emotional toll of watching your child struggle with addiction can be overwhelming, and it can feel like you are alone in your pain.
That's where The Addict's Mom comes in. This group was founded by Barbara Theodosiou, a mother who lost her son to addiction. She realized that there were many other mothers out there going through the same thing as her, and she wanted to create a space where they could come together to share their experiences, offer support, and find hope.
Since its inception in 2008, The Addict's Mom has grown into a nationwide organization with over 100 chapters across the United States. Its mission is simple: to provide support and resources for mothers of addicted children so that they can find strength in each other and work towards healing.
One of the unique aspects of The Addict's Mom is its focus on maternal love as an essential component of recovery. Mothers are often blamed or stigmatized when their children struggle with addiction, but this group recognizes that maternal love can be an incredibly powerful force for change. By providing unconditional love and support to their children while also setting boundaries and seeking help when needed, mothers can play an integral role in helping their children overcome addiction.
The Addict's Mom offers several resources for its members, including online forums where they can connect with other moms from around the country; local chapter meetings where they can meet face-to-face; educational materials about addiction; access to treatment resources; advocacy efforts aimed at changing policies related to addiction treatment; and more.
In addition to these resources, The Addict's Mom also hosts events throughout the year designed to bring members together for fellowship and healing. These events include annual retreats where moms can take time away from their daily lives to focus on self-care; candlelight vigils held on International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31st) as a way of honoring those lost to overdose; walks/runs held across the country as part of National Recovery Month (September); holiday gatherings designed specifically for moms who may be struggling during what should be joyful times; and more.
