About Tenuta di Valgiano
Tenuta di Valgiano: A Historic Agricultural Estate on the Lucca Hills
Nestled in the rolling hills of Lucca, Italy, lies Tenuta di Valgiano, a historic agricultural estate that has been producing exceptional wines, olive oil and honey for over two centuries. With its commitment to tradition and respect for the environment, Tenuta di Valgiano has become a leading producer of organic and biodynamic products that reflect the unique terroir of this beautiful region.
History
The history of Tenuta di Valgiano dates back to the 16th century when it was owned by noble families who used it as a hunting reserve. In 1823, it was purchased by Carlo Lazzerini who transformed it into an agricultural estate. Over time, the estate changed hands several times until 1993 when Moreno Petrini and Laura Di Collobiano acquired it with a vision to restore its former glory.
Today, Tenuta di Valgiano is not only a thriving agricultural business but also an eco-friendly destination where visitors can experience the beauty of Tuscany while learning about sustainable farming practices.
Wines
One of the main attractions at Tenuta di Valgiano is its award-winning wines. The estate covers over 25 hectares with vineyards planted on steep slopes at altitudes ranging from 150 to 350 meters above sea level. The combination of altitude and soil composition creates ideal conditions for growing Sangiovese grapes which are used in most of their red wines.
Tenuta di Valgiano produces several types of wine including Rosso Toscano IGT (made from Sangiovese grapes), Colline Lucchesi DOC (made from Sangiovese and other local grape varieties), Palistorti Rosso (a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah) and Palistorti Bianco (made from Vermentino grapes).
All their wines are made using traditional methods with minimal intervention in order to preserve their natural flavors. They are aged in oak barrels for varying periods depending on the type before being bottled unfiltered.
Olive Oil
In addition to wine production, Tenuta di Valgiano also produces high-quality extra virgin olive oil using olives grown on their own land. The olives are hand-picked at just the right time when they are fully ripe but not yet fallen off the tree.
The olives are then cold-pressed within hours after harvesting using modern equipment that preserves their delicate flavors. The resulting oil is rich in antioxidants and has a fruity aroma with hints of artichoke and almond.
Honey
Another product that sets Tenuta di Valgiano apart is its artisanal honey made from bees that feed on wildflowers growing around their vineyards. The honey is harvested twice a year during springtime when flowers bloom abundantly or during autumn when bees collect nectar from chestnut trees.
The honey comes in different varieties such as Acacia Honey which has a delicate flavor or Chestnut Honey which has an intense aroma with notes of caramelized sugar.
Sustainability Practices
At Tenuta di Valgiano sustainability isn't just another buzzword; it's part of their DNA. They believe that taking care of nature means taking care of people too since everything we consume ultimately comes from nature itself.
To achieve this goal they have implemented several sustainable practices such as:
- Organic farming: All crops grown at Tenuto Di Valligano follow organic farming principles without any use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
- Biodynamic agriculture: This holistic approach involves treating soil fertility as well as plant health through natural preparations like composting.
- Biodiversity conservation: By planting cover crops between vines they promote biodiversity among insects which helps control pests naturally.
- Energy efficiency: They have installed solar panels throughout their property reducing energy consumption significantly.
- Waste reduction: All waste generated during production processes gets recycled or reused whenever possible.
Conclusion
Tenuto Di Valligano represents more than just another winery; It's an example worth following for anyone interested in sustainable agriculture practices while still producing high-quality products like wine ,olive oil ,and honey . Their commitment towards preserving nature while still providing excellent customer service makes them stand out among other producers . If you're ever visiting Tuscany make sure you add them to your itinerary!
