Technovation Challenge: Empowering Girls and Families through Technology
Technovation is a global technology education nonprofit organization that aims to inspire girls and families to become leaders and problem solvers through technology. The organization believes that AI and technology education are for everyone, regardless of their gender, race, or socioeconomic status.
Founded in 2006 by Anuranjita Tewary and Tara Chklovski, Technovation has since grown into a worldwide movement with over 23,000 participants from more than 100 countries. The organization's flagship program is the Technovation Challenge, an annual competition that invites girls aged 10-18 to identify a problem in their community and develop a mobile app solution to address it.
The Technovation Challenge is designed to encourage girls' interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields while also promoting entrepreneurship skills such as ideation, market research, prototyping, pitching ideas to investors. Participants work in teams with mentors who guide them through the process of developing their app idea from concept to launch.
The program has been highly successful in empowering young women around the world. In fact:
- Over 15 years of running the program:
- More than $7 million awarded
- Over 30K girls have participated
- Over 5K apps have been developed
One notable success story is that of Team Cantavits from India who won first place at the Technovation World Pitch Summit in San Francisco for their app "Eedo" which helps farmers identify crop diseases using image recognition software. The team went on to secure funding from investors and launch their app commercially.
In addition to the Technovation Challenge program for girls aged 10-18 years old; there are other programs available:
