Tapton Lock Visitor Centre Review

Lovely little hidden gem , only came across whilst going to large supermarket will be visiting when not shopping that s for sure

Home of the derbyshire countryside service and the chesterfield canal trust who look after and restore the canal they operate boat trips from here there is also a small shop a cafe and toilets the staff here are very friendly if you want to do a spot of fishing you get your day ticket here

Didn't go to the visitor centre. Cycled along the Trans Pennine trail. Good tracks, well-signposted. Lots of people were using the trail: hikers, dog-walkers, families and casual walkers. Very quickly got a sense of being in the countryside even though we were still in Chesterfield. Very good blackberry picking too

A nice stop on a walk up the canal. Decent food and drinks at decent prices.

All roadside parking full and double yellow lines everywhere else round the Lock so nowhere to park.Never got to go to the Lock,total waste of fuel and time,never again.

Very smelly in places and a fair amount of dog poo on the path too.

Enjoyed a walk down the towpath, bit muddy and we'd today, really needed wellies! Tea in visitor centre was nice. There were no sandwiches left, only cake, which was a shame, however staff was very friendly and helpful. Toilet facilities were really good. Enjoyed visiting.

A lovely place to walk to or from, and a decent enough cafe. Not a bad little gift shop either.

A really tranquil place hidden in plane view, within yards of a really busy road. A little Jem

Always lovely. An oasis. Buy duck food. Don't feed waterfowl any bread.

Visitor centre approximately 1 mile from the start of the Cuckoo Walk which covers the whole of the Chesterfield Canal. There is road parking nearby and the visitor centre has toilets that are open.
The canal, if you walk towards Chesterfield has some old bridges and weirs/basins. In the opposite direction there are locks. A lovely place to start a walk.

Always worth calling in for a coffee - warm, friendly and very welcoming.

Very friendly and helpful staff you can have refreshments and a snack Sunday's you can have a trip on a canal boat (you may need to book).

Bit of free parking outside the merc dealer, then easy set of steps down to the canal. Lovely walk and you are soon in country side. Can get busy with push bikes.

What a great stop. We came from Hollingwood Hub to do 5 miles. So grateful for a toilet and a hot drink half way. Friendly Distanced service and a great price for 2 drinks. Decided NOT to go to Istanbul!!

What a lovely little place . Very friendly lady in the cafe. Hot drink machine and cakes avaliable. Toilets clean and easy access.
Great walk for dog walkers ,pram pushers , wheelchair users and push bikers.

Lovely spot by the Chesterfield canal. Picnic tables and public toilets. Takeaway cafe at the visitor centre open during lockdown with very reasonably priced drinks. Location also offers walks along canal tow path, apparently its 2500 miles to Istanbul. We didn't get that far today, another day maybe!

I used to volunteer at Tapton Lock about 15 years ago when I lived in Sheffield.I am planning to pay the people who run the canal barge the a visit,maybe next month.Such a lovely place.

Lovely walk on a beautiful day. There are picnic tables, ducks to feed. Kids loved it.

Went on canal trip with grandchildren had a great time staff very friendly and helpful

First time we have been along this canal and it was great.. We took a bike ride along the full length. I would recommend this canal for a walk or cycle.

Lovely little visitor centre run by friendly people. Cakes and snacks on offer, including vegan ice cream which is impressive. Very knowledgeable about the canal, lots of maps and free leaflets.

Quiet but nice. Perfect for avoiding all day in the towncentre

Very friendly staff can have snacks & drink also canal boat trip on Sunday's may need to book, you also can book trips in the week ,there's Santa special in December .

It gives you some background to the lock and canal as well as being a cafe with public toilets. Parking nearby as well.

Great for walking on the tow path. Lots of wild flowers rose hips and Rowan berries. We'll go again.

Get out of the town have a walk down the canal 2 minutes and you don't know Chesterfield is 2 minutes away.

First visit to the lock, everything you could expect from the day, nice little cafe and toilets. Dog friendly.

As a member of the British Canoe Union I can take my Kayak on the Chesterfield Canal at Tapton Lock. Yesterday I went for the first time. The lady on duty at the visitors centre was really helpful, pointing out alternative routes to take. Definitely will be going back for another go, this is an excellent facility which the town should be proud of.

The visitor centre provided the finest piece of millionaire shortbread that I've had in a long time. The hot chocolate was banging as well. Unfortunately, my girlf turned her ankle on a treacherous bit of towpath, and we had to hobble back to the car. Sad times.

It's a working office and tourist attraction for the Chesterfield canal restoration. Very pleasant canal side walks ( if you don't get knocked down by a bike) Many brambles/blackberries to pick in August.

Nice to see volunteers keeping this place running for the good of the canal.

Lovely walk along the canal, eventhough a portion is closed off at the moment. The cafe is really nice with friendly service.
