Svlas: Providing Free Legal Services to Low-Income Families in Southwest Virginia
Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society (SVLAS) is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal services to low-income families in 17 counties and four small cities in southwestern Virginia. The organization was founded with the mission of ensuring equal access to justice for all, regardless of their financial status.
At Svlas, we understand that navigating the legal system can be overwhelming and expensive. That's why we offer our services at no cost to those who qualify. Our team of experienced attorneys and support staff are dedicated to helping our clients resolve their legal issues and improve their lives.
Our Services
Svlas offers a wide range of civil legal services, including:
1. Family Law: We provide assistance with divorce, child custody, child support, adoption, domestic violence protection orders, and other family law matters.
2. Housing Law: We help clients with landlord-tenant disputes, eviction defense, housing discrimination claims, foreclosure prevention, and other housing-related issues.
3. Consumer Law: We assist clients with debt collection defense, bankruptcy filings (Chapter 7), credit report errors/disputes/identity thefts/fraudulent charges/illegal collections or garnishments or repossessions or foreclosures or liens on property), predatory lending practices (such as payday loans), unfair business practices by companies such as false advertising or deceptive sales tactics.
4. Public Benefits: We help clients apply for public benefits such as Medicaid/Medicare/Social Security Disability Insurance/Supplemental Security Income/Food Stamps/TANF/HUD Section 8 vouchers/Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program/WIC programs etc., appeal denials of benefits applications/renewals/benefits reductions/suspensions/terminations due to overpayments/fraud allegations etc., obtain reasonable accommodations from government agencies if they have disabilities that affect their ability to access benefits.
5. Employment Law: We assist clients with wage and hour disputes, discrimination claims, wrongful termination claims, unemployment insurance appeals, and other employment-related issues.
6. Education Law: We help students with special needs obtain appropriate educational services and accommodations under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
7. Immigration Law: We provide assistance with family-based immigration petitions, naturalization applications, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS), U visas for victims of crimes etc.
