Students Organising for Sustainability UK: Leading the Way in Environmental and Social Justice
Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS-UK) is a charity that is dedicated to supporting students and society in their efforts to learn, act, and lead for environmental and social justice. Originally part of the National Union of Students (NUS), SOS-UK has been working tirelessly since its inception to promote sustainability across the United Kingdom.
At SOS-UK, we believe that sustainability is not just an environmental issue but also a social justice issue. We are committed to creating a sustainable future where everyone has access to clean air, water, food, and energy. Our mission is to empower students and society by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to make positive changes in their communities.
Our work at SOS-UK focuses on three main areas: education for sustainable development (ESD), student engagement, and policy advocacy. Through our ESD programmes, we aim to embed sustainability into all aspects of education so that students can develop the knowledge and skills they need to become responsible citizens who care about the environment.
We also work closely with students across the country through our student engagement programmes. These programmes provide opportunities for students to get involved in sustainability initiatives on campus or within their local communities. By empowering young people with leadership skills and practical experience in sustainability projects such as recycling schemes or community gardens we hope they will be able take these experiences forward into their future careers.
Finally at SOS-UK we advocate for policies that support environmental protection while promoting social justice issues such as fair wages or affordable housing . We believe that government policies should reflect these values so that everyone can benefit from a more sustainable future.
One of our flagship initiatives at SOS-UK is Green Impact - an accreditation scheme designed specifically for universities which encourages staff teams across campuses nationwide to adopt more environmentally friendly practices within their departments . This programme has been hugely successful, with over 100 universities and colleges participating in the scheme since its launch in 2006. Green Impact has helped to reduce carbon emissions, increase recycling rates, and promote sustainable practices across campuses nationwide.
Another key initiative at SOS-UK is our work on divestment from fossil fuels. We believe that universities have a responsibility to divest from fossil fuel companies as part of their commitment to sustainability. Our campaign has been successful in persuading several UK universities to divest from fossil fuels, including the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow.
At SOS-UK we are also committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within our organisation and across all aspects of sustainability work. We recognise that environmental issues disproportionately affect marginalised communities, so it is essential that we work towards creating a more inclusive movement for change.
In conclusion, Students Organising for Sustainability UK is a charity that is leading the way in environmental and social justice initiatives across the United Kingdom. Through our education programmes, student engagement initiatives, policy advocacy work ,and flagship projects such as Green Impact or Divestment campaigns we are empowering young people with knowledge , skills ,and resources they need to make positive changes within their communities . We believe that everyone has a role to play in creating a more sustainable future where everyone can thrive regardless of their background or circumstances . Join us today!
