Student Voice: Empowering Students to Advocate for Educational Equity
Student Voice is a nationwide student-led nonprofit organization that works to equip students to advocate for solutions to educational inequity. The organization was founded in 2012 by a group of high school and college students who were frustrated with the lack of student input in education policy decisions. Since then, Student Voice has grown into a powerful force for change, with chapters in over 20 states and partnerships with leading education organizations.
At its core, Student Voice believes that students are the experts on their own experiences and should have a say in shaping policies that affect them. The organization works to amplify student voices through advocacy campaigns, research projects, and leadership development programs.
One of Student Voice's flagship initiatives is the Student Bill of Rights, which outlines ten principles that every student deserves in their education. These include access to quality teachers and resources, safe learning environments free from discrimination or harassment, and opportunities for civic engagement.
In addition to advocating for policy changes at the national level, Student Voice also supports local organizing efforts through its chapter network. These chapters are led by students who work together to identify issues affecting their communities and develop strategies for addressing them.
Through its various programs and initiatives, Student Voice has become a leading voice in the movement for educational equity. The organization has been recognized by numerous national media outlets including CNN, Forbes Magazine, NBC News as well as being awarded grants from major foundations such as Gates Foundation & Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
