Great theatre! Saw Seasons Greetings and the whole experience was top notch!
We visited Eat Me, all staff were so friendly and accommodating and they have it sorted perfectly regarding Covid19 measures. Brilliant!
Lovely evening, great play. Alan Ayckbourn's new Birthdays past, birthdays present.
Our favourite theatre because it is in the round, no viewing restrictions and comfortable seats.
Wonderful to be back in a theatre, watching a live show. The SJT is a fabulous venue and their Covid safety measures clear and imaginative (seat service for your internal refreshments). Simon Slater gave an incredible and compelling performance in Bloodshot. We'll definitely be back to continue supporting the arts and culture.
Visited Stephen Joseph Theatre today to view The Monstrous Heart. It's been a long time since I have been to the theatre but today was well worth a visit. I would recommend to anybody to take in a play or movie there.
Fine theatres, great building, wide variety of shows, great staff.
Just watched Martha, Josie, and the Chinese Elvis for the second time. Utterly, utterly brilliant. Laughed (a lot), cried (a bit) and thoroughly enjoyed every single minute. The cast were simply amazing and it was without a doubt the most enjoyable performance I have ever seen in any theatre.
World class theatre, premieres almost all of Alan Ayckbourn's productions, many of which tour nationally and to New York. Also the best cinema in Scarborough
Fantastic plays every time. Disabled access. Good value.
Big. We went to see No Knowing and all the attention was good
Helpful and polite staff, great show. Been a few times now and will be continuing to see shows here.
Great theatre experience. Best when showing plays "in the round'. Nice bar and so. Seats are numbing after a while.
Great, profesionsl show. Theatre lovely. PLEASE get lift fixed. Difficult access when you're disabled, as I am! Staff apologetic but did nothing to assist.
Wonderful little theatre, staff fantastic, and the little shop selling art by local artists was wonderful. Love how personal it all felt and so rare to find a lovely intimate theatre in the round!
A fantastic theatre in the round and a first class venue for drama.
Just watched Little Voice and as always a superb show in a superb intimate
authentic theatre in the round
Everyone knows about the theatre but few people seem to know about the cinema side of things which is a shame as it's great! There's no need to go to Middlesbrough, Hull or York!
This theater is really original. It consists of several different T spaces, and the only one I have experienced is the theater in the round. The productions are way more frequent in the summer than say 5 or 6 years ago, and this is because, as I understand it, the theater lost part of its Arts Council funding, so has had to tighten its collective belt considerably. But in a way that is to the advantage of the theater goer, as the breadth of productions now is quite stunning, and although Alan Aykeborne is still a recurrent playright in terms of their offerings, due to his close association with the theater, this also provides a good repertory for the theater. My only comment is that it's such a shame that they do not provide food anymore! The food choices in that area are not good, so either plan your evening well so that you have time to go elsewhere for supper, or bring sandwiches!
So in summary, no vacation to the Scarborough is really complete without stopping by and taking in one of the offerings of this jewel of culture in Yorkshire. Thank goodness it is still in operation.
Love going to our quarterly updates here such a difference to sitting in a stuffy room lovely unique place to hold your conferences
A traditional Odeon style building in the centre of town. Friendly and helpful staff who all seem to really enjoy working there.
Really good theatre in the round makes for a very intimate feel with actors as close as a metre or so at times. Alan Ackborn productions feature regularly and really like the Northern Broadside ones
Excellent production; magical, full of perfectly timed humour. Fabulous! Thankyou for arranging access to my Auntie who is very infirm.
Iconic Scarborough entertainment venue. The furnishings are timeless art deco style. Sadly only two auditoria: one round theatre, one McCarthy theatre/cinema. The absolute best thing about this cinema is the screening of classic films. I saw Brazil here, and I was blown away by the experience. The event even started with a discussion of the film, and consideration was given to first time viewers like myself. Unforgettable date night.
We went to see the 39 steps, which was hilarious and slick in the performances of 4 very versatile and funny actors.
We have not been to such a good adult play in along time, but we now have the taste for more and will definitely be more frequent visitors. I was surprised that not all the seats were filled.
The Theatre has benefitted from the refurbishment.
Of you are anywhere near to Scarborough you must support this wonderful theatre in the round
Great atmosphere, nice people, excellent shows and films. An asset to the town.
Really good and quick service, with an amazing show to compliment it. I had such a fun evening. I highly recommend this place.
The access for disability is dreadful I took a disabled friend and they are now poorly due to all the steps and no lift working yesterday. At least warn people before they attend or refund due to accessibility problems,
Arts Council grant chasing politically correct rubbish.
Theatre in the round with original plays. Good atmosphere and reasonably priced drinks.
Lovely theatre always visit it when in Scarborough havn't been disappointed yet.
Take the lift if you're going to the cinema as there are lots of stairs!
Sjt theatre is first class for a wide variety of entertainment. I love the local talent in the form of Rounders youth theatre as well as 1st class touring theatres like Broadside. Always something to see
Is a lovely Big building opposite Scarborough train station, which most people from the community and beyond use it to organise event's.
Lovely staff and great facilities... Amazing tech team!
The play we saw (Di and Viv and Rose) was amusing at first, and then there a was a twist and it really got emotional. I did enjoy it. Also, I liked the placement of the stage - in the centre, the audience sit around.
First time there, it was lovely, really enjoyed it, will be definitely going again,
Looks like a great space for the arts, and community spirited projects. I saw a powerful dance piece, Fantasia, by Rosie Kay.
Great venue that we are very lucky to have in Scarborough.
Visiting as a single person attending to see a play, I found the staff easy to approach and very helpful.
Brilliant theatre in the round - Ayckbourne and others.
Excellent comedy version of 39 Steps. Really funny and we'll acted.
SJT is wonderful, wide range of entertainment from comedy to opera, activities to suit all ages, welcoming, friendly & helpful staff- especially Jamie on ticket desk.
Very good. Enjoyed the performance of taking steps. Laughed a lot
Been to see Build A Rocket and it was wonderfully acted by a very talented young lady. Well worth going.
Sensational regional theatre. Always great professional shows. Love the place
I heard that during one play the 2nd act started with the solo artist 'smoking' as part of the performance. Was this a real cigarette?
Taking steps amazing each and everyone was fabulous so funny. A must see
My son love that place. He is visiting theatre with his class.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Booked tickets for last week but was ill and could make it. Gave them a call and they exchanged the ticket for something else with no fuss or problems xx
High quality theatre. Beautiful building inside and out putting on brilliant performances. The bar is great for pre drinks reasonable prices. Cinema screen is also good quality.
Nice theatre no step free access for the show we saw though
Stephen Joseph Theatre: A Cultural Hub in the Heart of Scarborough
Located in the picturesque town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Stephen Joseph Theatre is a cultural hub that has been entertaining audiences for over 60 years. With two auditoria - one in-the-round and one end stage - and a range of bars and restaurants, this theatre offers an immersive experience that is hard to match.
The history of Stephen Joseph Theatre dates back to 1955 when it was founded by Stephen Joseph, a visionary theatre director who believed in creating intimate spaces where actors could connect with their audience. Over the years, the theatre has evolved into a vibrant cultural center that showcases some of the best talent from across the UK.
One of the unique features of Stephen Joseph Theatre is its two auditoria. The Round auditorium is an intimate space with seating for up to 404 people arranged around a central stage. This configuration allows for an immersive experience where actors can interact with their audience from all sides. The End Stage auditorium, on the other hand, has seating for up to 165 people and offers a more traditional theatre experience.
Apart from its world-class performances, Stephen Joseph Theatre also boasts several bars and restaurants that cater to different tastes. Whether you're looking for pre-show drinks or post-show dinner, there's something here for everyone. From light bites at The Shop to fine dining at Eat Me Cafe & Bar or Pizza Express next door – you won't be disappointed!
But what really sets Stephen Joseph Theatre apart is its commitment to nurturing new talent through its OutReach program. This initiative provides opportunities for young people from diverse backgrounds to develop their skills in acting, writing or directing under expert guidance.
In addition to this program, there are also regular workshops and masterclasses conducted by industry professionals throughout the year which are open not only for aspiring artists but also anyone interested in learning more about theater production.
If you're planning on visiting Scarborough anytime soon then make sure you add Stephen Joseph Theatre on your list! With its rich history and exciting lineup of performances throughout the year – it's definitely worth checking out!
