The best and biggest library in the CBD and possibly Melbourne. Excellent place to get work done provided you can find a spot. It is often very busy around exam periods. The WiFi can be a hit or miss, it is either painfully slow or usable depending on where you are. Printing services is not intuitive and painfully expensive, $3.90 for a B&W 26 page document that is printed double sided.

These images speak for themselves. I love libraries, I find that this is by far one of the best I've been. Well cared for and with an unmissable beauty. Organized pamphlets at the entrance to the library map and the books are perfectly organized

Good for a quick visit and internet use. Has enough tables outside of peek hours to sit down. Free internet as well if needed. The outside can get busy to get a good picture of the facade, but that is to be expected.

It is the best library to study in.
Holy as a church, inspiring like a University.
I always hope to stay in a city with great libraries.
Melbourne is definitely a city of this kind.
Broad area makes air fresh.
It is beautiful as well, with so many paintings and exhibits.
It is being renovated at this moment, to make it modern and more space.
The first time I came to Melbourne, I stayed in this library for 5 hours- originally planned for 40 minutes - just sit there reading books.
Now I have moved to Melbourne, and visit SLV and other libraries at least once a week as all libraries including SLV, university libraries and local community libraries are so worth for a visit.

Great place to visit and spend a couple of hours taking a seat for reading.

I stayed only for three months four years ago, but it is a very nice and calm library.
In Japan, it seems that it appears in a movie at a large library that is not easy to find.
I sometimes went to see Japanese newspapers.
If you go to Melbourne, please stop by.

A place like a movie.

Chess, a great place to play, from grandparents to children who study long-term

Once here, eating a lollipop recliner, watching a movie, listening to someone playing out of the piano probe

Stunning design and the staff are always on hand to help. I also appreciate the exhibitions they have. The place in general exudes a great deal of warmth and is the perfect place to study, read and learn.

Stunningly beautiful building, and that's just the start of it. Library and associated services are great as well. Varying interesting exhibitions. Great place to visit just to see it, or to spend a few quiet hours reading or studying.

Free entry and the place is easy to find. We took the free tram. The library itself is quite crowded but still quiet. There were lots of people studying. The library is quite beautiful. Lifts available as well.

It is great place to study. However, I find some people selfish. Every time when I visit, there are lots of spot where people just leave their bags and stuff on the desk. I am not sure why people would do because if you are the person who are looking for a spot, it is very annoying. Especially, if you have blocked nose or runny nose, please bring something like tissue that so you're not causing any inconvenience and disturb other people's study. My personal advice for those who are planning to study there: try to be there before noon so that way you would find a spot easily as it is always full in the afternoon. Again it is great building and stuffs are friendly.

A beautiful building and one of the best libraries you can visit. Inside you just feel like working / studying. It feels very academic. Rows of wooden tables to write your notes on and columns of books rise into the upper levels. Outside there is a 'pretend' broken piece of the library building rising out of the ground as if after an earthquake. Green areas to sit in the summer. Time to put away your ipad and Kindle and take out a book...

Didn't get a chance to stop inside but I would highly recommend checking this place out. The exterior architecture is absolutely stunning and a work of art and the inside contains some amazing artifacts and history related to the founding of the state. They also offer tours through the artifacts at various times through the day.

A landmark of Melbourne. The state library is deeply connected to the culture of Melbourne, it is often decorated based on certain events the city runs.

The library is open to all during business hours and has a large range of books and other media available for viewing and borrowing. Anybody with a Victorian address cam borrow a book free of charge.

A very good place for self study.

Remember you cannot take a cup of coffee or food into the library ( exclude bottle water)

Not easy to park ( you can choose park in Melbourne Centre or QV shopping centre $19 per day)

A state landmark known in Melbourne, the state Library of Victoria is a historical structure. A conducive place for everyone who enters, the library is silent as many are reading, studying or viewing the gallery.

Cosy reading rooms. Power plugs available for laptops. Various reading rooms for different subjects. Tons of reference books. Seperate room for news papers and magazines. Good collection of manuscript rare books on display. One particular book that caught my eye Dante's Divine Comedy. Ned Kelly and bush men exhibits. Cafe and book shop on ground floor. A must visit destination.

The building is magnificent inside and out. My personal favourite part is the La Trobe Reading Room.

There are several free exhibitions throughout, not just about books, but also Australian history and the like.

It's a great, peaceful place to take a break from exploring the city, relax after work or school, or study.

I went to work on my computer. I can not drink or drink anything other than water! The employees are all in control. Though many visitors and tourists will visit every day, it is nice to be quiet, clean and well managed!

Its a very good library, shame one cannot borrow books from there because its mainly a research library, but one can photocopy certain page from books. very helpful staff and wifi sometimes gives connectivity issues but can be solved from the available IT desk. Would be nice to have some more seating. but has lovely collection of books and could use some international research books. great online services though.

Located just 100m away from Melbourne central station. The entrance is through the Russel St. The book collection is good. One can use the computers there or just take your laptop and study. You don't want to buy books of different topics then this is the place for you. Also, you will find really good exhibitions and tours. Go and enjoy this beautiful place.

Beautiful library, generously open and staffed by a great team of people.

It's a traditional library and so much more. Exhibitions, galleries, work spaces, chess club, historical displays and a few random curios like the Shakespeare stained glass window.

Architecturally, a wonderful study and so much of the interior is accessible.

Cafe, book store and toilets all available. Wheelchair accessible too.

Exhibits they have on the upper levels are very cool.
Warning: do not come during exam period unless you plan to arrive before 10am - it's pure chaos as people steal chairs from every place imaginable.

After a revamp, the State Library of Victoria reopened in December 2019. It is immaculate inside with the latest technology and a variety of seating options for students, tourists and remote workers. They can host events and have dedicated kids areas. I recommend Mr Tulk cafe for brunch and coffee which is located on the La Trobe Street side and has access into the library.
