A good alternative to the bookstore on campus although the prices are not always the best. Be sure to price comparison between the two. They do have a very good selection of various other school supplies as well. The bag check thing when you come in is a little goofy, but I've never lost anything there.

Usually something interesting in here. Large selection of school supplies and MSU branded merchandise. The prices are okay. Enforcing a bag check doesn't make me feel very welcome, but I think theft is a common problem.
EXTREMELY RUDE! I was in shock of how they treated me, I walk in and I said hi to the cop that was standing by the desk and she was like give me your bag so I gave her my bag and she threw it in the cubbies! I had my phone in there! I go to look at the clothes and everything is super over priced and I didn't know I came when it was closing because it was my first time coming there and a different lady came up to me and she said can I help you? And I was like I'm just looking for small shirts and she was like well we're close now and I was like ok.. well do you know any places that have msu shirts and she was like here and started handing me a bunch of small shirts and I was like no I'm just going to go to somewhere else and she was like ok bye. NEVER going there again !
Will most likely have books and materials required for classes but better off buying/selling online like with most physical book stores. They do have a large selection of MSU apparel which is nice.
Over priced textbooks and rude staff. I bought a book after the return date and they still wouldn't let me return it two days later. I will be going to collegeville from now on.

Good choices for Spartan fans but pricy. Adult and child sizes available. Pet and household goods with the Spartan and University logos are for sale as well. Student supplies, books, art supplies, nursing supplies, stethoscope and scrubs. Get your parking validated before you leave.
Merchendice is authentic and the collection is ok but quite pricey. It's a great stop to check common things but if u are looking for a novelty have to continue looking at other bookstores or online
Got $50 shorts, thought they were too much but they were actually what MSUs actually wearing, replicas, very good store!

I walk into the store at 5:50 and tell the security guard (who is a black hole for charisma and happiness) specifically that my dad was on the way to give me a card so I can rent a book. My card expired near the rental due date so I needed another card. And I place the book I wanted right on his desk which was right next to the cashier and while I was running outside to grab the card, the guy locked the door on me at 5:58. The last time I checked, when a business says closed at 6, that means the register is closed at 6. It would have taken less than minute to be rung up. Very unprofessional and rude. And this is coming from someone who literally never leaves reviews.

Good selection of MSU apparel if you are looking for really expensive stuff. Barely anything there is less than $20. Poor service and rude staff depending on when you go to the store. For every good employee there are two rude ones

We love MSU, but SBS is looking worn on the inside. The place could really use a facelift on the inside. It's like a timewarp back to 1991 when you walk in.
Great apparel the Prices are suggested retail price which is a little steep for me. The store is clean and safe. Make sure you check your bags at the door.

This is place is dark... Books are overpriced and the refund policy is stupid. I bought a text book that cost 340$ and I wanted to return it on the next day since I got the Ebook code. Then the cashier told me that I can not refund the book since they have a policy saying books are not refundable after the first week of school WHICH IS THE DAY BEFORE I BOUGHT THE BOOK. Then I asked is this policy written anywhere? They said yea we had a poster in the back corner of the store :)
I wasn't told about the policy when I bought the book and I certainly did not notice the "poster" at the back of the store. By the way, if I sell the book back to them, they would only give me 150$
God I really wish there are other ways to let people know this book store is so messed up
Always great finds here. Decals for inside and out for your vehicle, a very wide variety of hats, including throwback designs. Flags, all kinds of tailgating supplies. Every conceivable type of clothes from sleepwear to outerwear and everything in between. Make sure you stop in for free apple cider and donut holes on game days. And if you time it right the Sparty and the MSU Drum Line will perform in the median in front of the store pre-game. GO GREEN!!!
Great store, has everything MSU you could ever imagine. Prices are high, but the selection is impressive!
The bookstore is the best location to go to shop for all of your MSU apparel. It can be crowded during the weekends and the prices can be high for certain items, but it has better quality items than other locations. I would use some of the other bookstores to buy your course books each semester.
Very helpful with finding books, and the online book pickup is quick. A ton of Spartan spirit apparel and accessories.
I would never recommend students buy their books here. In fact, don't buy them if you can help it. Wait until classes start and find out if you actually even NEED the book, and if so, check amazon or other local stores/friends/etc for used copies. Book pricing with book stores like this are a huge racket.
That being said, SBS does have a fantastic selection of MSU gear, as well as supplies for very major-specific things (architect drawing tables, etc). As alum's, we always stop by SBS when we visit campus to pick up clothes/swag/etc. Always a good time, though the prices are always pretty absurd, but that's what you get with trade-marked gear.
Didn't buy many books here because they aren't really competitive with Amazon!

The books here are pretty reasonably priced if you rent them. Sometimes even cheaper than renting on Amazon! The clothing selection is huge and i love how they customize clothing. I had a St. Patrick's Day shirt made there and i love it.
I ordered a couple of items online. And though it took me months and filing a couple times with the USPS, they ended up refunding my money because by that time, they no longer had the item I ordered.
Last week, I purchased a sweatshirt from SBS. Upon wearing it, I realized I had gotten a size that was too large.
When I went back to the store, their student employees provided friendly service and quickly got my exchange taken care of. I was in/out in about 5 mins.

Spartan Gear Headquarters, Crowded on game day worth the stop
As an out of state spartan fan I was happy with the selection and was prepared to pay high prices. But when it came to needing a size exchange for a gift on my way out of town, I really gained a different perspective on the place.
They did not have the size I needed which caused me to get a different item. The item was less expensive and they would o my exchange for equal or greater value. Took my suggestion for them to think of doing a return and repurchase. Wow what a concept. Got it done but took probably twice as long as necessary and to be honest the situation wasn't even necessary. What policy maker would rather take a return and full refund (loss of income) rather than exchange and partial refund.

What can you really say about SBS - it's a student bookstore! But it is also an icon in East Lansing. The biggest selection of Sparty gear and tchotchkes. Prices are a bit higher than you might find at Walmart but better quality and selection. If you're visiting MSU you should make this your souvenir stop.
I went in this store to purchase a textbook this morning. I knew what I was looking for and the aisles are clearly labelled so I told the first attendant that I did not need any help. I was on the phone, talking quietly as to not disturb others, just finishing up a conversation. As soon as I stopped at the section I needed, a second attendant showed up and literally stood two feet behind me and watched me. They just stood there quietly and did not ask if I needed any help, just watching. It felt very awkward, especially because I was trying to end my phone conversation and this person was just there listening to me (and watching). I clearly was not trying to take anything, as I had went out of my way to ask the bag checker when I came in if I needed to leave my purse there to satisfy their security policies. Even if you are watching to make sure books are not being taken, I'm going to need more than two feet between us. I felt like my personal space was invaded. When I called the person whom I was talking to back to apologize for ending our conversation so abruptly, they mentioned that the same thing happened to them and their mother, when the two of them visited the store just a week or so prior. Very off-putting. In the end, they had the book I needed but I decided that I was going to purchase it from another seller because of the poor customer service.
TL;DR I was followed around the store, very closely, which ultimately resulted in me deciding to buy the book I needed from another seller.
Worst customer experince ever. The young lady had no smile, no friendly greeting and now customer interaction skills. We spent over $800.00 there on clothes and to habe that experince is horrible. I am a msu grad and well into my career. I will remember her face and name! Good luck getting a job with that attitude and personality. Here is one Alum that will never hire you! Shame on you yo the mansger we spoke too and the book store for lsck of training and/or discipline! Time to order on line!

The policies at this place are very poorly structured toward student welfare. Return policies for textbook rentals early in the semester are unforgiving/non-existent, and it's very clear they have no regard for student interests. I would highly recommend only going here as a last resort. It would be well worth the time and money to do your research and buy elsewhere.

Staff was personable and friendly/ Only gave 4 stars because textbook prices are obscene.
Some of the staff is extremely rude, especially the one that takes the book rental application. Rather than explaining the process, she belittles you for not knowing what the rental process is. Clearly she doesn't care that she treats customers like garbage.
