smell funny when I opened it. The bird was not gutted properly, there was grit that had come out of the gizzard. I had to clean and scrub before cooking. It was tough. Even the soup i made was bad. DONT BUY

THIS REVIEW IS TO ADDRESS 1. MY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PRODUCT AND 2. THE PREVIOUS REVIEWS. - BAKING HENS ARE USUALLY ANTIBIOTIC FREE, older and their meat can be tougher, but more flavorful. This type of chicken is best used in stews and soups where the meat has time to break down during the long, moist cooking. - OTHER CHICKEN LIKE TYSON AND PERDUE BRANDS ARE YOUNGER, AND THEREFORE MORE TENDER, AND DON T REQUIRE LONG COOKING TIMES. - I PREFER SOUTHERN HENS BECAUSE THEY WORK BETTER IN THE FOOD THAT I PREPARE AND COOK. - AS REGARDS PREVIOUS REVIEWS PLS. DO NOT JUDGE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SOUTHERN HENS, WHEN YOU HAVE NOT BEEN EDUCATED ON THE VARIOUS TYPES OF CHICKEN TYPES. - I HAVE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED COOKING WITH THESE HENS AND I GIVE THEM THE HIGHEST RATINGS. THANKS
Do not even try to work here. They will tell you to do stuff and when you get caught by USDA they will deny it and you will get fired. This place sucks
Bought one at wally world last nite baked today tough as leather dear Lord. I've cooked these before and they were good you couldn't even chew the skin and I'm a pretty good cook
This chicken that I got from southern hens was thee worst chicken in the world... Cooked it came out with NO FLAVOR and was the TOUGHEST MEAT I'VE EVER TRIED TO EAT. Had to feed it to the wild animals that come to our house. Never ever again will I buy shouthern hens products...

Read all the bad reviews, those folks aren't lying! Toughest chicken we've ever had, texture was disgusting. Straight to the trash it went. Looking at the reviews, it amazing me that even back 3 years ago this brand of chicken got the same reviews, not edible! How does this company stay in business and why would any store stock this brand!? Oh well, chalk it up to lesson learned, don't buy Southern Hens, Inc brand chickens, you'll be writing a review too!
I purchased this chicken today at Walmart and when I went to clean it it had pin feathers that were over 2 inches long. It had dark spots on the back. The one wing I cut off had dark brushes on it. I paid $8.56 for it. I will never buy another one from the Southern Hens Company.
Oh my gush!!I took this southern hen out of bag and on the skin I could see black spots. They looked nasty.after washing and cutting those spots I started to dry it and bounced a big bump under skin and thought maybe they put live and stuff under it ,then tried to take them out but it was a huge tumor probably about two and a half inches.and when I tried to cut it out with knife it broke and something yellow got out.I don't think I will be able to eat chicken for a long long time.I have never seen such a thing in my 65 years of age.Never buy from this company. Never.
