Sound Rivers, Inc.: Protecting the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico Rivers in Eastern North Carolina
Sound Rivers, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to protecting the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers in eastern North Carolina. The organization was founded in 2015 as a merger between two existing riverkeeper organizations: the Neuse River Foundation and the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation. Since then, Sound Rivers has been working tirelessly to monitor water quality, advocate for environmental policies, and promote environmental justice.
The Neuse River is one of the largest rivers in North Carolina, stretching over 275 miles from its source near Raleigh to its mouth at Pamlico Sound. The Tar-Pamlico River system covers over 3,000 square miles of eastern North Carolina and includes several major tributaries such as Fishing Creek, Swift Creek, Contentnea Creek, and others. These two rivers are not only important for their ecological value but also for their economic significance as they provide drinking water for millions of people living in eastern North Carolina.
One of Sound Rivers' primary goals is to monitor water quality in these two rivers through regular testing programs. The organization collects samples from various locations along both rivers and analyzes them for pollutants such as bacteria levels (E.coli), nitrogen compounds (nitrates), phosphorus compounds (phosphates), heavy metals (lead or mercury), pesticides or herbicides residues among others.
The results of these tests are used by Sound Rivers' staff members to identify potential sources of pollution that may be affecting water quality along both rivers. This information helps them work with local governments or industries responsible for polluting activities to reduce their impact on these vital resources.
Another important aspect of Sound Rivers' work is advocacy on behalf of clean water policies at local state or federal levels. They work with elected officials at all levels to ensure that laws are enacted that protect our watersheds from pollution while promoting sustainable development practices.
In addition to monitoring water quality and advocating for clean-water policies; Sound Rivers also promotes environmental justice by engaging communities disproportionately affected by pollution issues around both river systems through education campaigns about how they can take action against polluters who harm their health or livelihoods.
Sound Rivers also offers educational programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting our natural resources among young people living near both river systems; this includes school visits where students learn about watershed ecology while participating in hands-on activities like stream sampling or tree planting events organized by volunteers across different counties within Eastern NC region where these two major river systems flow through.
Overall; Sound Rivers has become an essential voice advocating for clean-water policies while promoting sustainable development practices within Eastern NC region where it operates today!
