Smith County Historical Society, Inc.: Preserving the Past for Future Generations
Smith County Historical Society, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the rich history of Smith County, Texas. Founded in 1959, the society has been actively collecting and preserving historical artifacts and documents related to the county's past.

One of the most notable sites operated by the society is the Goodman-LeGrand Museum in Tyler. This historic home was built in 1859 by Samuel Gallatin Smith and later purchased by Thomas R. Bonner in 1873. The house remained in Bonner's family until it was donated to the historical society in 1973.
Today, visitors can tour this beautifully restored home and learn about life during different periods of its history. The museum features period furnishings from both families as well as exhibits on local history.
Another site operated by the society is Camp Ford Historic Park located just outside Tyler city limits on Highway 271 North. During Civil War times Camp Ford served as a Confederate prison camp for Union soldiers captured during battles fought west of Mississippi River.
The park features interpretive signage that tells visitors about life at Camp Ford during its operation from August 1863 until May 1865 when it was closed after war ended with surrendering Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House Virginia on April 9th ,1865 .
In addition to these museums and historic sites, Smith County Historical Society also offers educational programs for schools throughout East Texas region . These programs include field trips to various historical sites around Smith County as well as classroom presentations on local history topics such as Native American tribes who lived here before European settlement or early pioneers who settled here after Texas became independent republic in 1836.
The society also publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Chronicles of Smith County, which features articles on local history and updates on the society's activities. Members of the society receive this newsletter as well as discounts on museum admission and other events.
