Save yourself the headache and spend your hard earned cash on a new bike at one of the other shops within a 15 minute walk of Sid's (I've had consistently positive experiences with Bicycle Habitat and Echelon Cycles which are both pretty close).
Back in June I purchased a new Cannondale and the entire experience has been a nightmare. As the old adage goes, it's not what happens that's important but how you respond and the team at Sid's has failed miserably at providing ANY level of acceptable customer service.
As soon as I started having issues with my new bike on day 3 of ownership, I was treated like a nuisance, never followed up with, and spoken to with blatant disrespect from the manager of Sid's as I expressed my concerns and tried to come to some resolution.

Rude man who works here. You cannot even look at anything without his rude attitude. I want to support small businesses but not if you are going to be rude to me for looking.
I came to this Sid's Bikes NYC today to return a pair of water shoes and also to buy a doggy backpack for my dog. Right when I entered, I was greeted by a Sid's Bikes NYC customer representative, who was nice and friendly. However, he told me dogs are NOT allowed because there's food in the store. He was nice enough to let me grab different sizes of doggy backpacks and bring them outside for my dog to try on.
I dropped into Sid's unintentionally, and I'm glad that I did. It was a wonderful experience, and the staff was welcoming and knowledgable. No egos. No pushy salespeople.
I can't say enough good things about Paul and his services. You won't meet a nicer person and I've been very happy with the work he's done on both a more simple job putting the finishing touches on an out-of-the-box bike for my wife and a much more complex job assembling a custom flat-bar road bike from the components I provided. Excellent work done with a smile and a handshake - can't beat that!
I dropped my Ritchey Breakaway off last week for a platinum service. I called ahead and explained exactly what I was looking to get done on my bike and went through it again with the mechanic I spoke with. I was told I would be getting a call over the weekend or on Monday with a status update since I was also looking to buy new wheels which the mechanic said they would need to look into and then get back to me about.
My disappointment first came in by me never getting a call by Tuesday afternoon and when I did call, I asked what was done on my bike and asked specifically about my cables being replaced. The person I spoke with said that they had been changed but when I arrived to pick my bike up I could clearly see my old colored crimps and tape on the cables. When I asked about it in person, the mechanic said that they didn't see a note about cables being changed. He was kind enough to take the bike back and work on the cables but again when I go to pick up my bike I see the same cables but with new crimps. Since the cables are exposed I can see all the grime on them and with the bike being a breakaway I could see the tape that I use to keep the connectors from rattling was never removed. I feel really cheated and lied to. It brings me to question the overall quality of Sid's. I specifically came to this shop because I felt it was a place that would pay attention to the details.
My new innertube also was put on without a locking nut or stem cap which leaves it rattling. My brake tension is also inconsistent between my front and rear brakes. I also asked for new brake pads and saw that I did not get them.
Overall, I paid for a full tune up but did not get it. Since I'm going on a several day long trip so soon I didn't have the time to give my bike back to get reworked again. At this point I want to trust Sid's with my bike again but am concerned with their quality and fairness.
This used to be my bike shop. The people who used to work here, and Sid in particular, were always helpful and respectful. But now, quite a few of the guys here are plain rude and unhelpful. Tijon in particular has such an attitude problem. Its a shame... Definitely spend your hard-earned dollars elsewhere.
