About Shumla archeological research & education center

Shumla Archaeological Research & Education Center: Preserving the Oldest “Books” in North America

Shumla Archaeological Research & Education Center is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving and studying the rock art of the Lower Pecos Canyonlands, which is located in southwest Texas. The center was founded in 1998 by Dr. Carolyn Boyd, who has been studying the rock art of this region for over 30 years.

The Lower Pecos Canyonlands is home to some of the oldest and most complex rock art in North America. The rock art consists of paintings and engravings on limestone cliffs and cave walls that date back as far as 4,000 years ago. These images provide a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of ancient peoples who lived in this region.

Shumla’s mission is to preserve this unique cultural heritage for future generations through research, education, and outreach programs. The center’s research focuses on understanding the meaning behind these ancient images by analyzing their content, style, and context. Shumla also uses cutting-edge technology such as photogrammetry and 3D modeling to create digital records of these fragile sites.

In addition to its research efforts, Shumla offers educational programs for students from elementary school through college level. These programs include field trips to local archaeological sites where students can learn about archaeology firsthand from experts in the field.

One unique aspect of Shumla’s work is its use of “citizen science” volunteers who help with data collection at archaeological sites. This approach not only helps advance scientific knowledge but also engages local communities in preserving their cultural heritage.

Shumla has received numerous awards for its work including recognition from UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization) as a model program for community-based conservation efforts.
