About Shelter Network of San Mateo County
Shelter Network of San Mateo County, now known as LifeMoves, is a non-profit organization that provides interim housing and supportive services for homeless families and individuals in the Peninsula and Silicon Valley areas. The organization's mission is to help people experiencing homelessness to rapidly return to stable housing and achieve long-term self-sufficiency.
LifeMoves has been serving the community since 1987, when it was founded as Shelter Network of San Mateo County. Over the years, the organization has grown significantly in size and scope. Today, it operates 17 facilities across four counties in California: Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and Alameda.
The organization's approach is based on a "housing first" philosophy. This means that they prioritize getting people into stable housing as quickly as possible before addressing other issues such as employment or mental health. By providing safe and secure interim housing options for families and individuals experiencing homelessness, LifeMoves helps them stabilize their lives so they can focus on achieving long-term self-sufficiency.
On any given night, LifeMoves feeds over 850 residents who are experiencing homelessness. In addition to providing food and shelter services at their facilities throughout the region, they also offer a range of supportive services designed to help clients get back on their feet. These include case management services that connect clients with resources such as job training programs or mental health counseling; financial assistance programs that help clients pay for rent or utilities; educational programs that teach life skills like budgeting or cooking; and more.
One unique aspect of LifeMoves' approach is its commitment to data-driven decision-making. The organization collects extensive data on its clients' needs and outcomes over time so it can continually refine its programs based on what works best for each individual client.
LifeMoves relies heavily on community support to fund its operations. They receive funding from government grants but also rely heavily on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and faith-based organizations who share their commitment to ending homelessness in our communities.
