I was a patient of Dr. Shade's before moving out of the area. I recently moved back to Pa. and am once again using Shade Eyecare. That in and of itself should speak volumes on what I think of her. I always receive the best care and the staff is friendly and courteous. I could not ask for more from an eyecare professional.

A couple of years ago after going to shade for glasses I knew my vision wasn't right. She said that was the best she could do. Went somewhere else and found out that I had cataracts. Don't go there.
I initially went to this eye doctor because of the reviews on Google and I had an extraordinary experience here. I loved the staff and the doctor - they are all friendly and personable and knowledgeable which for me is worth it all. Definitely will be going back over and over.
I have been a patient of Shade Eye-care for several years. Ten days ago I "lost" my eyeglasses in an automobile accident. Shade immediately helped me out by finding a spot in the schedule for an eye exam, ordering my replacement glasses, and delivering my much needed glasses in two days after the exam. Everyone at Shade was simply interested in what I needed and doing more than necessary to make it happen. And, in the middle of it all, each member of the Shade team was welcoming, pleasant, concerned, and part of my healing process. THANKS!
Dr. Shade is absolutely wonderful and the staff is very friendly!! She is very thorough. Many years ago she caught a tear on my retina, she explained what the problem was and exactly what I needed to do to fix it - not to mention what I should expect and keep an "eye" out for. LOL, Pun intended. I'll never go anywhere else for my eye care and I would highly recommend her to all of our friends & family!! Keep up the great job :)
Let s take a moment and educate ourselves. Dr Shade is a Optometrist! She can do an eye exam and treat eye changes. This means she can prescribe glasses and contact lens. An Ophthalmologist can do a eye exam treat eye disease, perform surgery and diagnosis any medical eye concerns. Dr. Shade can not, she is limited in her scope of practice. She may be able to recommend you to a Ophthalmologist if she has concerns but she can not treat any medical issues other than glasses.
We went to Dr Shade 9-10 years ago. I was very concerned after our appt about her billing practices. She scared me badly making me feel guilty for not getting a medical referral prior to my appt. Making a routine eye exam much more serious then it needed to be. Because I had 20/20 vision and no history of any eye trauma or concerns we felt she was deceptive in her own financial gain and we decided not to go back.
We have had the same Ophthalmologist for over 30 years and we decided when we couldn t locate her to give Dr. Shade another try recently. Beware!!! Our insurance covers a full routine exam yearly, which includes Refraction, eye pressure, visual fields and Glaucoma testing. With NO CO-Pay. You must dilate the eye to perform these tests. After her tech Stephanie did a simple chart eye exam for me, she asks me what else do I need. I said my eyes dilated and the Dr to perform her check up. She told me, I said I only wanted a routine visit when I scheduled the our appts. I said for over 30 years this was always performed at my annual eye appt. she looked at me like I had 3 heads. Then sent me to The scheduling lady. Who also proceeded to tell me the same thing. I needed a referral to proceed! As though I was neglecting my health. I was lead to believe the only services that would be performed that day was a simple eye chart exam by the tech unless I got a medical referral. I called my PCP, Referrals were sent to Dr Shade. In the interim my husband was only given a simple eye chart test by Stephanie and sent on his way!! He did not receive the full routine exam. He was told to reschedule for 2 appts. His appts are for For Glaucoma testing. The Glaucoma testing is already apart of the routine eye exam Dr. Shade is paid for! However when he goes back he is required to pay 2 additional co-pays??? When the additional testing is already apart of the routine exam???
I was told I am a Medical patient now and will Always have to pay a $25.00 co-pay because I have dry eye. Which by the way my insurance company said is not a medical diagnosis or claim. I was also Told I had a detachment to my eye sometime in my life when I still have 20/20 vision. So my eye exam was submitted for a medical claim, Yet, what they did was a routine eye exam. This office Had us sign papers we are responsible for anything our insurance doesn t pay. However Dr. Shade is in network? So essentially she would Be paid for a routine eye exam and have to accept what she is paid unless she submits medical claims? Which the insurance I was told probably won t pay anyway! Especially after I told them this doctor does not perform the full Eye Exam!!
Would you take your child for a physical and go back the next day for immunizations? Or go to the dentist and get your teeth cleaned and go back for another appt for the dentist to do an exam, so you pay a co-pay. When by the way a routine eye exam covered at 100% does not have a co-pay????????? This office scares their patients into getting referrals, deceives you into thinking they can diagnose and treat any serious eye problem. Let s remember what a Optometrist can actually do, and eye exam and prescribe glasses.
This whole experience was awful and that of confusion and convoluted actions. I suspect so they can up-charge your insurance and have built in claims.
I've been going to Shade Eyecare for many years and have always been satisfied with the services provided. I was very pleased with the new girl Chelsea who is the eyewear technician. She was very helpful and did not pressure me to purchase the most expensive frame. It was a very positive experience and I would recommend them.
Helpful, friendly staff. Professional, courteous doctor and assistant. I will return there for regular visits, and know they are available in an emergency.
Very professional and personable. They take the time to answer all questions and really have the patient's welfare in mind. Been a long time patient and would recommend Shade eyecare to anyone looking for a good eye doctor.
Very welcoming environment. Dr. Shade is very attentive. She explains and answers any questions one may have. The eye-wear selection is great!!!!!! Love the practice:)
I am a bit confused in regards of the reviews, I requested an appointment on July 13th , on July 16th I got a response from Lori H asking a couple questions in regards of insurance, age among others, I responded, I have health insurance but not vision, I give all the rest of the information and asked about prices and accepted forms of payments, I am fully aware I will pay all costs out of pocket, today is August 2nd and have still yet to get an answer from anyone, Is not having vision plan on your health insurance grounds for automatic dismissal?
My husband and I have been patients of Shade Eye Care for years and have always been pleased with the treatment we receive. The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgeable. We would never consider changing to another Eye Care Center.
Dr. Shade is absolutely the best in town. She has been BEYOND accommodating and genuinely cares for her patients. She met me on her day off in private to make sure I was healing properly from cataract surgery. She gave me a sample of eye medicine on behalf of my surgeon. She made phone calls to my surgeon on my behalf and was kind and encouraging. She has a lovely practice with staff that really care. Look no further. You found your eye doctor.
We took out 11 month old son for a routine visit. We were VERY pleased with the way he was examined & how things were explained to us. Great eye doctor. The whole family will now be going there!!!
I recommend Shade eyecare all the time! I find the entire staff very friendly and helpful. I have some issues with my vision, which in other practices it took 3 different specialists to care for me, where here, I see a tech for some of the tests and then follow up with Dr. Shade! She is thorough, up to date on technology and on top of that very friendly! I will continue using this group even though I moved from the area! Thank you, Michele and Staff!!!
I have been a patient of Dr. Shade for many years. Dr. Shade and the staff are 1st class. I have had several occasion where I needed to be seen immediately and the staff always made time to see me, even on a busy day. If you want the best eye care in the area, Dr. Shade is the place to go.
Shade Eye care is very professional making excellent use of technology coupled with personal care. Dr. Shade carefully explained all procedures and gave realistic prognoses regarding future developments with my vision. She was also practical when it came to decisions regarding purchases of lenses and frames. Overall a pleasant experience.
I just had my 2nd eye checkup at Shade eyecare.Everyone is very nice and friendly. They take time to explain what they are doing and why.I am 56 yrs old and this is the 1st eye Dr. I have ever been to.I first came because I was having trouble reading the eye chart at my company Doctors office.Since coming to Shade eyecare I have realized the importance of getting yearly checkups so if there is a problem you can catch it in the begining stages.
I have found all the staff at Shade Eyecare to be a very caring and willing to accommodate you in any way possible. I have found it easy to schedule appointments at a time that is convenient for me. Dr. Shade is very thorough in all of the work that she has done with me. She explains what she is doing and why it is important. I recently had a process done that helps to make my eyes less dry. and true to her word, my eyes felt better almost immediately. The other staff perform their task thoroughly and always make me feel important. I would recommend Shade Eyecare to anyone who values their eyes.
If you plan on going to Shade Eye care watch your out of pocket expenses. They billed me for an exam because my major medical denied that part of the expense. When I thoroughly reviewed my out of pocket to explanation of benefits I called them and questioned why they didn t bill my vision plan. They don t do that unless the patient asks them. Coordination of Benefits is something that medical providers should do automatically. Why out the patient the expense that s why they pay for insurance. I will be taking my business to a provider that will bill the correctly.
