I did my PADI open water certification here. The instructor (and other dive pros) were good, understanding, and very helpful. People operating the dive shop were super friendly as well.
Seven seas scuba is conveniently located on Cannery row, and the actual open water dives are done on the beach less than 100 yards away. This makes things like refilling empty cylinders, renting gear, or returning gear really easy.
The only downside I see is the cold Monterey water, which often has a very low visibility. I lost my buddy a couple times while going through sections where visibility was as low as 3 ft. Of course, the store has no control over this.
I want on a guided dive with Seven Seas yesterday (as a novice OWD), and had a great experience. Dave, the divemaster/instructor, was very personable and enthusiastic, and great to dive with. The rental gear was in great shape too.
The clincher for this dive shop though is the location: It's directly across the street from the breakwater -- so if you want to dive there, you can just suit up in the shop, walk over, and hop into the water.
