Sevalaya: A Charitable Trust Dedicated to Uplifting the Poor and Empowering Women
Sevalaya is a registered charitable trust that has been working towards the upliftment of the poor, empowerment of women, and care for the downtrodden for over 28 years. Founded in 1988, Sevalaya was inspired by the teachings of Mahakavi Bharathiyar, Mahatma Gandhi, and Swami Vivekananda.
The vision of Sevalaya is to create a society where every individual has access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, education, healthcare and employment opportunities. The organization believes that poverty can be eradicated only through education and empowerment.
Sevalaya's mission is to provide quality education to underprivileged children who cannot afford it. The organization runs several schools in rural areas where children from economically weaker sections are given free education. These schools not only provide academic knowledge but also focus on character building and personality development.
Apart from providing education to children, Sevalaya also runs vocational training programs for women. These programs aim at empowering women by providing them with skills that can help them earn a livelihood. Women are trained in tailoring, embroidery work, handicrafts making etc., which enables them to become self-sufficient.

In 2016-17 alone they have received several awards including "Best NGO Award" from Tamil Nadu Government's Department of Social Welfare; "Best School Award" from Rotary Club; "Best Volunteer Award" from Lions Club International; "CSR Award" from Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and "Best NGO Award" from The Hindu.
