About Seeds
SEEDS is a nonprofit organization based in Northern Michigan that has been dedicated to providing after-school programs, youth conservation corps, and energy and environment analysis services for over 20 years. The organization was founded with the aim of empowering young people to become active participants in their communities by providing them with opportunities to learn about environmental sustainability, leadership, and community service.
One of the key areas of focus for SEEDS is its after-school programs. These programs are designed to provide students with a safe and supportive environment where they can learn new skills, explore their interests, and build positive relationships with peers and mentors. The after-school programs offered by SEEDS cover a wide range of topics including science, technology, engineering, arts, math (STEAM), outdoor education, health & wellness.
Another important aspect of SEEDS' work is its youth conservation corps program. This program provides young people with hands-on experience in environmental conservation through projects such as trail building & maintenance; invasive species removal; habitat restoration; tree planting; stream monitoring & restoration; recycling initiatives etc. Participants gain valuable skills such as teamwork & leadership while also making a positive impact on the environment.
SEEDS also offers energy and environment analysis services which help businesses reduce their carbon footprint while saving money on energy costs. The organization's team of experts conducts comprehensive assessments that identify areas where businesses can improve their energy efficiency through upgrades or changes in behavior.
In addition to these core programs/services offered by SEEDS there are several other initiatives that the organization has undertaken over the years including:
- Community gardens: SEEDS has established several community gardens throughout Northern Michigan which provide fresh produce for local residents while also promoting sustainable agriculture practices.
- Green infrastructure: Through partnerships with local governments & organizations SEEDS has helped design green infrastructure projects such as rain gardens & bioswales which help manage stormwater runoff.
- Environmental education: In addition to its after-school programs SEEDS offers workshops & presentations on various environmental topics such as climate change mitigation/adaptation strategies etc.
Overall SEEDS is an innovative nonprofit that has made significant contributions towards promoting sustainability among young people while also helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint. Its unique combination of after-school programming/youth conservation corps/energy/environmental analysis services makes it stand out from other nonprofits working towards similar goals.
