About Science for technological innovation national science challenge
The Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge (SfTI) – Kia Kotahi Mai: Te Ao Pūtaiao me Te Ao Hangarau, is a 10-year science investment that aims to tackle New Zealand's high-tech challenges and grow the economy and prosperity through physical sciences and engineering. This initiative was launched in 2014 and will continue until 2024.
The SfTI is a collaborative effort between the government, industry, academia, and research institutions. The goal of this challenge is to create new technologies that will help solve some of the most pressing issues facing New Zealand today. These include developing sustainable energy sources, improving healthcare outcomes, enhancing food production systems, creating new materials with unique properties, and advancing digital technologies.
One of the key features of SfTI is its focus on collaboration between different sectors. By bringing together experts from various fields such as physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science and mathematics; SfTI aims to foster innovation by encouraging cross-disciplinary research projects.
The challenge has already made significant progress towards achieving its goals. For example; researchers at Victoria University have developed a new type of solar cell that can be printed onto flexible surfaces using inkjet technology. This breakthrough could lead to cheaper solar panels that are more efficient than current models.
Another project funded by SfTI involves developing advanced sensors for monitoring water quality in rivers and lakes across New Zealand. These sensors use cutting-edge technology such as machine learning algorithms to detect changes in water quality in real-time.
In addition to funding research projects; SfTI also provides training opportunities for students pursuing careers in science or engineering fields. This includes scholarships for postgraduate study as well as internships with industry partners.
Overall; the Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge (SfTI) – Kia Kotahi Mai: Te Ao Pūtaiao me Te Ao Hangarau represents an exciting opportunity for New Zealand to become a leader in high-tech innovation. By fostering collaboration between different sectors and investing in cutting-edge research projects; SfTI is helping to create a brighter future for all New Zealanders.
