Schoony's Malt Shop & Pizzeria Review

I and my son who has special needs tried to solicit service from this establishment after a nice hike at the nearby state park. Due to my son's special needs we were unable to enter the establishment as my son is forced medically to live in an inflatable hermetic bubble. As it was very hot and my son was sweating from the greenhouse effect we really wanted to cool off in air conditioning with gluten free Ice cream. However, unlike many ice cream shops we've visited in the past, the doors were only single wide and we could not squeeze my son through the single doors. When I asked the proprietor if he had any lubricant to help squeeze my son through the door, he simply grumbled and refused to provide my son with any lube. Despite the sweat which was puddling in the bottom of the bubble due to the heat, he told us to drive to the dairy Queen if we wanted Ice cream. I have no idea how such an unfriendly business can keep running... Your guess is as good as mine since we were not able to to sample any ice cream that day.

It's a bit of a hole in the wall restaurant / ice cream shop, but on a hot day this place is perfect for a cool treat. Also, as others have mentioned, the inside is kind of dark - almost like a bar atmosphere.

We always stop here after hiking in Interstate Park. Great atmosphere, friendly service, and even better ice cream. Good pizza and a grrat collection of glass bottled soda. Nice to see a mom and pop place do this well.

Pizza was ok, only took 9 minutes to cook a whole pizza. He gave us $4 off, that was nice. I gave it back in a tip.

Nice ice cream and pizza shop. Pizza is good and they have a wide variety of flavors. They also have a bunch of different sodas and malts. I didn t care for the $1 charge for using credit cards.. and there was a lot of flies in the place. Overall, it s a good place to check out when in town.

This amazing place made it feel like we were kids again. My butterscotch shake was dreamy.

Great ice cream shop, awesome service. Tons of ice cream flavors to choose from! The pizza looks great, will have to try that next time. Chicago style hot dogs too! Definitely will be back. Nice seating areas, and plenty of space for distancing.

Two lines, one to get an ice cream and one to pay for it.. and if you want slice of pizza, there is a third line. This store is a perfect example of how not to run an ice cream shop.

They have 30+ flavors of ice cream, and all of them I've tried have been delicious! Unfortunately they lost a star due to the fact that they serve little to no food most days despite it being on the menu. In summary: stop there for a treat, skip for a meal!

Our family frequents the area, & attends the Lighting Festival every year. This particular time we stopped in to get pizza after the parade. It took forever to get help to place an order, & when we finally got our food the pizza was wrong. We asked to speak to the owner, & explained our frustration. His response was "Yeah? We're busy." No apology, no offer to remake the pizza, no offer to discount our order. Nothing but attitude. The service was terrible, & the owner was a jerk. We haven't gone back. Now everytime we go to the area we eat at Pizza Planet in St. Croix Falls up the hill. The service is great, & the pizza is awesome! Every time! Save yourself the trouble, & go there instead.

Been coming here on trips since I was a kid, we went a couple weekends ago and it was as good now as it was back then, great ice cream and service. Got a growler of root beer to go! Must stop if your in the area!

The old building and great employees make this a must stop every time I go through Taylor's falls with the kids. The ice creams great too!

We had malts (strawberry, butter scotch and root beer float). They were good but smaller then expected.

My friends and I came here after hiking at Taylor s Falls and it was the best treat! The staff was friendly, the area was cute and clean, and the ice cream was delicious. Everyone got shakes but I got a waffle cone with banana ice cream & chocolate. Yum!

Had a coney dog and ice cream with the kids! Still great in the winter.

aesthetic was amazing! That hole in the wall Pizza Shop, its grungy vintage appeal was what was most Charming, the hardwood floors and old fashion booths made it feel cozy, The Pizza was fabulous - With Pizza its all in the crust quality and It was Scrumptious! Pizza Paired with 1919 root beer is a dinner made into a memory! - I loved the tiny little town of Taylors Falls!

Delicious ice cream in so many flavors! And they are not stingy on the portions at all-one scoop was plenty for me! The decor is fun, with old games from bars and vintage candy bar boxes. It was really cool to look at.

I like to go with friends to this restaurant with my highest recommendations. I go to this restaurant often. This recommendation is always successful. The the food there is delicious and the stuff is efficient and cooperative. always when we visit this place we pass a cheerful time. highly recommended.

Super fun ice cream shop with many flavors available. The atmosphere is really fun inside. The only suggestion for improvement would be to offer at least one option of non-dairy ice cream. There is sorbet available as a non-dairy option, but it would be nice to have non-dairy ice cream so I don't always have to run down the street to get non-dairy ice cream at the deli and come back and meet up with everybody else at Schoony's.

DELICOUS! The ice cream was ever so refreshing on the hot day! I just got to write my review after a few weeks, but I am soooo happy! The ice cream was big even for a small! The worker was so nice! He was outstanding at his job, wish I would have caught his name. The atmosphere was very nice. The temperature wasn't to hot or cold (something that really bothers me!) Definitely recommend!

Tried the caramel malt and a couple of ice cream flavors. The portions were super big and it was really tasty!

I love schoonys!!! We go there all the time for ice cream. The service is great, fun atmosphere. And the sell growlers of Shells 1919 root beer. Definitely stop in at schoonys next time you are in Taylors Falls.

Staff today was extremely helpful and on point.. and the waffle cone scoops were so ginormic 3 out of 4 of us couldn't finish without some water or a cup

Don't go to this place! Very rude older man. I assume the owner. The website said closed at 8:00, we walked in at 7:30. He very rudely said he was closed. I told my husband let's go. On the way out we heard him rudely say thank you. Never experienced such rude service. NEVER EVER STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE!!

Good for ice cream and soda, but they don't serve food when it's busy on the weekends

good atmosphere but dark-maybe to hide the lack of maintenance. Was here on Mother's day with our two young children for pizza and ice cream. First it is strange they prepare food without gloves or washing their hands (the same hands that exchange money-They charge you for electronic payment-must of not realized the decades have since changed) anyways... my 3 year old daughter said she had to go to the bathroom, so we went around the corner where there was a sign stating: "For customer use only" Ok, fine. Then another sign stating "out of service". We asked an employee and she politly stated to try and go accross the street and use one. I sure hoped they didnt have a sign stating "for customer use only" accross the street. One would expect that on a busy day like "mother's day" they would have functioning facilities. I can only bet that the restroom will still be "out of service" for many weeks to come. Great potential however the Owner/Manager could put a little more effort and get a lot more out of this place. Generally a dissapointment.

Nice family place with about 30 flavors. Nice staff. Single cone is about $5. The half size is plenty big for less.

I am a little surprised by some of the reviews. I have been here many times over the years. The owner has always been friendly and patient with us, and I was going there with 2-3 kids, after hiking. The staff seems to change yearly (summers). Friendly laid back atmosphere, ice cream selection, well made pizza they roll out their own crust, hot dogs, malts, shakes, root beer floats. Indoor or out door seating, friendly staff. Great place to go after hiking, and kid friendly. And they are very generous with the portions. (This year I did note they take only cash, and I asked about ATM and he kindly directed me to a business with a ATM, note this is a small town area and there are fees for stores using Visa for EVERY purchase so it is understandable).

Growing up in Taylor's Falls where Schoonys is located I have found a new appreciation for this establishment with 3 boys now of my own. They absolutely love coming here when we are back in town and it reminds me of my own childhood as well in their eyes getting to have a big bowl of ice cream and some root beer. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the Taylors Falls area for more than simply desert and food but the ambience as well of a small town small business doing everything the right way.
