Satilla Riverkeeper: Protecting and Restoring the Ecologically Unique Satilla River
Satilla Riverkeeper is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is dedicated to protecting, restoring, and educating about the ecologically unique Satilla River in Southeast Georgia. The organization was founded in 2004 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a strong voice to advocate for the river's health and well-being.
The Satilla River is one of Georgia's most important waterways, stretching over 260 miles from its headwaters in Ben Hill County to its mouth at St. Simons Sound. It is home to an incredible diversity of plant and animal life, including rare species like the Atlantic sturgeon, American eel, and Gulf sturgeon.
Unfortunately, like many rivers across America, the Satilla has faced numerous threats over the years. Pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial waste has degraded water quality; dams have disrupted natural flow patterns; development has destroyed critical habitat; and climate change has altered weather patterns.
That's where Satilla Riverkeeper comes in. As "the eyes and ears of the river," our team works tirelessly to monitor water quality, identify pollution sources, advocate for stronger environmental regulations, restore damaged habitats through planting native vegetation or removing invasive species such as Chinese tallow trees or hydrillas.
We also work closely with local communities along the river to educate them about how they can help protect this vital resource. We offer educational programs for schools or community groups on topics such as watershed ecology or conservation practices that can reduce pollution runoff into streams or rivers.
One of our most significant achievements was securing protection for more than 100 miles of critical habitat along the lower Satilla through designation as a National Wild & Scenic River by Congress in 2020. This designation ensures that these areas will be preserved forever so future generations can enjoy their beauty while also providing essential habitat for fish populations like striped bass, shad, and sturgeon.
Satilla Riverkeeper is also a member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a global network of more than 350 organizations that work to protect waterways around the world. This membership provides us with access to resources and expertise from other Waterkeepers across the country and around the world.
In conclusion, Satilla Riverkeeper is an essential organization that plays a vital role in protecting and restoring one of Georgia's most ecologically unique rivers. Our team works tirelessly to monitor water quality, identify pollution sources, advocate for stronger environmental regulations, restore damaged habitats through planting native vegetation or removing invasive species such as Chinese tallow trees or hydrillas. We also work closely with local communities along the river to educate them about how they can help protect this vital resource. With your support, we can continue our mission to ensure that future generations can enjoy all that this beautiful river has to offer!
