About Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority
Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority: Leading the Way in Sustainable Waste Management
Salinas Valley Recycles is a public agency and utility service that owns and operates the only open and active landfill in the Salinas Valley. The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) was established in 1992 to provide sustainable waste management services to the residents of Monterey County, California. Since then, SVSWA has been leading the way in promoting environmental sustainability through its innovative waste management programs.
The mission of SVSWA is to reduce waste generation, promote recycling, and ensure safe disposal of solid waste. The authority achieves this by providing comprehensive solid waste management services that include collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of all types of solid waste generated within its jurisdiction.
One of the key initiatives undertaken by SVSWA is its Zero Waste Program. This program aims to divert as much waste as possible from landfills by promoting recycling and composting. Through this program, SVSWA has been able to achieve an impressive diversion rate of over 70%, which means that more than two-thirds of all solid waste generated within its jurisdiction is being diverted from landfills.
SVSWA also operates a state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), which processes recyclable materials collected from households and businesses within its jurisdiction. The MRF uses advanced sorting technology to separate different types of recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, glass, metal etc., which are then sold to manufacturers who use them as raw materials for making new products.
In addition to these programs, SVSWA also offers a range of other services such as household hazardous waste collection events where residents can safely dispose off hazardous materials like batteries or chemicals; bulky item pick-up service for large items like furniture or appliances; composting workshops for residents interested in learning how to compost at home; educational outreach programs for schools etc.
SVSWA's commitment towards environmental sustainability has not gone unnoticed. In 2019 it received an award from CalRecycle (California Department Of Resources Recycling And Recovery) recognizing it as one among five agencies statewide with outstanding achievements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable practices.
