It was founded in 1854 as the Salem Normal School and has since evolved into a comprehensive university offering undergraduate and graduate programs across six colleges. Academics
Salem State offers over 80 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as more than 40 graduate programs. The university's six colleges are the College of Arts and Sciences, Bertolon School of Business, College of Health and Human Services, School of Education, Marsh School of Nursing, and School of Social Work. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college at Salem State with over 30 majors ranging from biology to theatre arts. The Bertolon School of Business offers undergraduate degrees in accounting, finance, marketing, management information systems (MIS), management/leadership development (MLD), sport management (SM), hospitality management (HM) among others.
The College of Health and Human Services provides students with hands-on experience through clinical placements in nursing homes or hospitals while studying health sciences such as occupational therapy or physical therapy assistantship. The school also offers degrees in social work which prepare graduates for careers working with vulnerable populations such as children or elderly people.
The Marsh School Of Nursing provides an excellent opportunity for those who want to pursue a career in nursing by offering both undergraduate BSN program & MSN program which prepares nurses for leadership roles within healthcare organizations.
The school also offers an online RN-to-BSN program that allows registered nurses to earn their bachelor's degree while continuing to work full-time.
