Roman Road: Preserving History and Nature
Roman Road is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve the historical and natural beauty of two sites in Cambridgeshire, England - the Roman Road and Fleam Dyke. These sites are not only of great archaeological interest but also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.
The Roman Road is an ancient trackway that dates back to the Roman period. It stretches for about 7 miles from Cambridge to Wandlebury, passing through Fulbourn, Great Wilbraham, Little Wilbraham, and Six Mile Bottom. The road was once an important trade route connecting Colchester with Lincoln.
Fleam Dyke is a linear earthwork that runs parallel to the Roman Road for about 4 miles. It was built during the Iron Age as a defensive boundary between different tribes. Today, it serves as an important habitat for many rare species of plants and animals.
Large sections of both sites are Scheduled Monuments under UK law due to their historical significance. They are also Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because they support some of the most diverse chalk grassland habitats in Europe.
The Friends of the Roman Road and Fleam Dyke was set up in April 2001 by a group of local residents who were concerned about the deteriorating condition of these sites due to neglect, vandalism, and encroachment by development projects. The organization's primary objective is to raise funds through donations, grants, sponsorships, events, and merchandise sales to carry out conservation work on these sites.
Over the years, Roman Road has achieved significant success in its mission thanks to its dedicated team members who volunteer their time and expertise. Some notable achievements include:
- Restoring several sections of footpaths along both sides
- Clearing overgrown vegetation from ditches
- Installing new gates at access points
- Erecting information boards at key locations
- Conducting regular surveys of flora and fauna
- Organizing guided walks and talks for the public
Roman Road has also collaborated with other organizations such as the National Trust, Cambridge Past, Present & Future, and Natural England to share knowledge and resources.
The organization's work has not only helped to preserve the historical and natural value of these sites but also provided opportunities for education, recreation, and inspiration. Many people from all over the world visit Roman Road every year to experience its unique charm.
