Reading University Students' Union: Empowering Students to Achieve Their Goals
Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) is the official representative body for students at the University of Reading. Established in 1892, RUSU has been serving the student community for over a century, providing them with a platform to voice their opinions and concerns, and empowering them to achieve their goals.
RUSU's mission is to enhance the student experience by providing opportunities for personal development, supporting academic success, and promoting social interaction. The union strives to create an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and respected.
Academic Support
RUSU offers a range of academic support services that help students achieve their full potential. The Academic Advice team provides guidance on academic issues such as appeals, complaints, mitigating circumstances, and disciplinary procedures. They also offer workshops on study skills such as time management, note-taking, and exam preparation.
The Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) scheme is another initiative that RUSU runs to support students academically. PAL sessions are led by trained student leaders who provide guidance on course content and study techniques in small group settings.
Social Activities
RUSU recognizes that university life is not just about academics but also about socializing and having fun. The union organizes various events throughout the year that cater to different interests such as sports tournaments, cultural festivals, music concerts, comedy nights etc.
The Student Activities team oversees over 150 societies ranging from sports clubs like football or rugby teams to cultural groups like African Caribbean Society or Chinese Society. These societies provide opportunities for students with similar interests or backgrounds to connect with each other outside of class.
Representation
One of RUSU's primary roles is representing the views of its members at all levels within the university structure. The union has elected officers who sit on various committees alongside senior management staff ensuring that student voices are heard when decisions affecting them are made.
RUSU also lobbies on behalf of students at the local, national and international level. The union campaigns on issues such as student finance, mental health, housing etc. to ensure that students' interests are protected.
Facilities
RUSU operates several facilities on campus that enhance the student experience. The 3sixty nightclub is a popular venue for social events and live music performances. The union also runs two bars - Mojo's and Park Bar - which offer affordable drinks and food options.
The Advice & Representation Centre (ARC) is another facility run by RUSU that provides free confidential advice to students on a range of issues such as housing, employment, welfare benefits etc.
Conclusion
Reading University Students' Union plays a vital role in enhancing the student experience at the University of Reading. From academic support to social activities to representation, RUSU provides a comprehensive range of services that cater to all aspects of university life.
By empowering students with the skills and resources they need to succeed academically and socially, RUSU helps them achieve their goals both during their time at university and beyond.
