About Rarecan
Rarecan: Accelerating Research for Rare Cancer Patients
Rare cancer is a term used to describe any type of cancer that affects fewer than six people per 100,000 individuals each year. While rare cancers may be less common than other types of cancer, they can be just as deadly and often require specialized treatment. Unfortunately, research into rare cancers has historically been underfunded and understudied, leaving patients with limited treatment options and little hope for survival.
That's where Rarecan comes in. As a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating research into rare cancers, Rarecan is committed to improving the lives of those affected by these devastating diseases. By bringing together patients, researchers, clinicians, and advocates from around the world, we are working to advance our understanding of rare cancers and develop new treatments that can save lives.
Our Mission
At Rarecan, our mission is simple: we want to help people with rare cancer live better, longer lives. We believe that every patient deserves access to the best possible care and treatment options available - regardless of how uncommon their disease may be.
To achieve this goal, we focus on three key areas:
1) Accelerating Research: We fund cutting-edge research projects focused on understanding the biology of rare cancers and developing new treatments.
2) Building Community: We bring together patients with rare cancers from around the world so they can connect with one another for support and share their experiences.
3) Advocacy & Education: We work tirelessly to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those living with rare cancers while advocating for policies that support increased funding for research into these diseases.
Our Approach
At Rarecan, we take a collaborative approach to tackling the challenges posed by rare cancers. By bringing together experts from across different fields - including oncology researchers, clinicians specializing in treating specific types of cancer or symptoms associated with them (such as pain management), patient advocates who have firsthand experience navigating healthcare systems while living with rare cancers, and more - we are able to leverage the collective knowledge and expertise of our community to drive progress.
We also prioritize transparency in all of our work. We believe that it's important for patients, donors, and other stakeholders to understand how their contributions are being used to advance research into rare cancers. That's why we regularly publish updates on our website about the projects we're funding, the progress being made in the field, and how people can get involved.
Our Impact
Since our founding in 2018, Rarecan has made significant strides towards improving outcomes for people with rare cancer. Here are just a few examples of what we've accomplished:
- Funded over $1 million in research grants focused on understanding the biology of rare cancers and developing new treatments.
- Built a global community of over 2,000 patients with rare cancers who connect through online forums and support groups.
- Advocated for increased funding for research into rare cancers at both the national and international levels.
- Raised awareness about the challenges faced by those living with rare cancers through media appearances, speaking engagements at conferences around the world.
Looking Ahead
While there is still much work to be done when it comes to understanding and treating rare cancers, Rarecan is committed to continuing its efforts until every patient has access to effective treatment options. We believe that by working together as a community - patients, researchers, clinicians, advocates - we can make real progress towards this goal.
