Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust: Preserving the Natural Beauty of Maine
Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust (RLHT) is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly to conserve land, water, and dark sky in the Rangeley Lakes region of Maine since 1991. The trust's mission is to protect and preserve the natural beauty of this area for the benefit of both present and future generations.
The Rangeley Lakes region is known for its pristine lakes, forests, mountains, and wildlife. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts who come here to fish, hike, camp, ski or simply enjoy nature's beauty. However, with increasing development pressures on this area over the years, there has been a growing concern about preserving its unique character.
This is where RLHT comes in. The trust works with private landowners and other partners to acquire conservation easements or outright ownership of lands that are important for their ecological value or scenic beauty. These lands are then protected from development forever.
To date, RLHT has conserved over 14 thousand acres of land in the Rangeley Lakes region through various means such as fee acquisition or conservation easements. This includes more than 30 miles of shoreline along some of Maine's most beautiful lakes such as Mooselookmeguntic Lake and Cupsuptic Lake.
In addition to conserving land, RLHT also works towards protecting water quality in these lakes by monitoring water quality data regularly and implementing best management practices on its own properties as well as partnering with local municipalities on watershed protection projects.
Another important aspect that RLHT focuses on is preserving dark skies in this area which have become increasingly rare due to light pollution from urban areas. The trust works towards reducing light pollution by promoting responsible lighting practices among residents and businesses in this area.
RLHT also offers educational programs such as guided hikes or paddles led by knowledgeable staff members who share their expertise about local flora/fauna/ecology/history etc., workshops on topics like birdwatching or mushroom identification etc., school programs that teach children about environmental stewardship etc.
The trust relies heavily on donations from individuals/families/corporations who share its vision for preserving this unique landscape forever. Donors can choose to support specific projects/programs/initiatives that align with their interests/values/goals etc., or make general contributions towards supporting RLHT's overall mission.
In conclusion,
