Unpleasant Experience and Overpriced Ring at Pure Gold AUH Terminal A
On 23 July around 1:00 PM, I visited Pure Gold Jewellers at Abu Dhabi Airport Terminal A, accompanied by my 65-year-old mother. What we hoped would be a professional and smooth shopping experience turned into a frustrating and disappointing interaction.
I politely asked the saleswoman for the current per gram price of 24K gold. At first, she ignored the question. When I asked again, she said she didn’t have the information. After pressing further, she finally replied that it was 375 AED per gram, but the way she delivered this answer was stiff and dismissive — holding out her phone and saying “see this” in a curt tone, as if I were inconveniencing her. She claimed they “don’t keep gold by the gram” and never apologized or tried to explain clearly. Her mannerisms and lack of eye contact made both me and my elderly mother feel awkward and disrespected.
Another male staff member nearby also behaved rudely, and neither offered the basic courtesy one would expect in a premium retail setting.
But beyond the unpleasant service, what really surprised me was the pricing. After our visit, I did the math:
Gold rate: 375 AED/gm
Weight of the ring: 2.52 gm
Gold value: ~945 AED
Final price charged: 1689 AED
That’s an extra 744 AED — nearly 79% over the raw gold value. We weren’t informed clearly about the making charges, VAT, or any other costs justifying this markup. There was no price breakdown, and no effort to help us understand the value proposition. We later realized the ring was significantly overpriced, especially considering its simplicity and weight.
This experience — from the unprofessional attitude to the unjustified pricing — left us feeling let down. For a brand as well-known as Pure Gold, especially in an international airport, the lack of service and transparency is unacceptable.
Buyers deserve respectful treatment and honest pricing. This visit made me rethink my trust in the brand.
