We stayed at the Pridwin for two nights. It was an odd combination of one of the worst places we ve ever stayed, while simultaneously being one of the most expensive. We rented a studio cottage, which cost well over $600 per night including the additional $55 they charged us for our kid to join us . (He had to sleep on a beat up pull out couch, for which they provided no blankets or pillow)
Honestly, even Motel 6 rooms are ALWAYS way nicer. In addition to the couch, there was wood paneling in need of a paint job; no closets; a tiny kitchen with $20 faucets, a baby fridge that sounded like a truck and which we had to unplug to sleep; no bathroom door; a rickety, old scratched Target coffee table; one crooked, pressboard dresser; busted plastic Venetian blinds; threadbare, tiny towels, barely a step above the ones they let you use in low-rent gyms; literally a .15 cent hook that was supposed to be the door lock; a broken screen door, no WiFi etc.
If this was the cabin that my kids had to use for Sleepaway Summer camp, all of this would make sense. Then again, summer camp would cost $1500 a week including all food and activities and supervision. For $600/night, The Pridwin doesn t even give you use of the tennis courts etc. That costs extra.
The view is nice. The place, otherwise isn t merely a joke. It s an insult.

First time at the restaurant at the Pridwin. Views from the balcony during dinner were very nice. Food was tasty and service was good, except for a small mistake by our waitress the night was perfect.
We went for their Wednesday BBQ - all you can eat self serve - good food, nice variety from salads, fresh corn on the cob, fresh tuna chunks, ribs, chicken, steak, hamburgers & hot dogs, clams, shrimp, muscles and little bread rolls. Your ticket includes beer, lemonade or iced tea. Dessert can be watermelon and brownies or cookies.Coffee or tea is also served. We had a great time in a beautiful location.
Let me first start by saying any of the 5 star ratings on this site must be attempts to keep this horrible hotel above a 3 star rating. I'm not going to fill this review with a lot of fluff, I'm just going to give you the facts so you know exactly what you're getting if you stay here.
My boyfriend and I checked in for a 5 night stay on Sept 8th around 8:00 PM. It wasn't until we checked in that we were told "the hotel restaurant and bar are closed and will remain closed unless the hotel reaches 50% capacity". I'll ruin the suspense and tell you that the hotel never reached 50% capacity and I had no idea what a huge issue that posed until about an hour later when we were driving around the island looking for something to eat.
Let me warn you now, the day after Labor Day apparently marks the change between Shelter Island and Gilligan's Island. Almost everything is closed due to the "Off Season". There are no food options -- especially after 9 PM. The continental breakfast offered at the hotel is laughable and there's no mini fridge in the room to store food, so we found a grocery store and loaded up on non-perishable items. My idea of a relaxing vacation isn't driving around in search of food, all because someone failed to tell me this vital piece of information prior to my stay.
The Pridwin isn't a "Gatsby Era", charming, family-run hotel. It's old, rundown, unkempt, dirty, putrid smelling, and I can assure you there isn't a sweet, family-run, charming quality to this establishment at all. There was one gentleman working at the front desk, James, who was the only nice staff member I encountered. Our bathroom smelt like a locker room, our AC didn't function properly (the common areas of the hotel didn't have working ACs either), and the game room literally has a stained carpet that smells like animal urine.
This is already becoming longwinded, so I'll sum up my stay at The Pridwin: We left 2 nights early because we couldn't bare the thought of staying one more minute. I can't even explain how disappointed we were. It was the first vacation either of us had in 2 years and we felt completely robbed of an enjoyable vacation and robbed of our money. As we were walking up the main entrance stairs to check out, I literally stepped over a roach. As if I needed anymore convincing, that was a clear sign that we were making the right decision.
We weren't expecting our money back (although it would have been nice and the decent thing to do). We really just wanted an apology and some customer service. However, the Accounts Manager called me the next day and was not only unapologetic, but RUDE! "We don't have roaches here...I don't know why no one told you the restaurant would be closed, because we know when it's going to be closed for the season, but it's up to you to do your research before staying here...I had 5 other guests check out today and they'll all be staying with us again!". I can promise you, there literally weren't 5 other guests staying at the hotel at the same time as us.
If you book this hotel you may as well feed your money to your dog and let him defecate on your head.
My favorite place on the East End of Long Island. A beautiful, casual, comfortable hotel, overlooking the sunsets on Crescent Beach. Friendly staff, great food and reasonable prices. Highly recommended.
Multiple staff members were rude and unaccomodating. My wife and I have had reservations for months. Upon arrival, all good and beverage options were unavailable to paying hotel guests, because of a private function. No notice was given. We have visited Shelter Island several times over the past 4 years, this is by way the worst accommodations we've experienced.
The Pridwin is a lovely place with a fantastic view. Not much activity, but a great place for relaxing. Lovely pool, the beach is small and rocky. Rooms could be a little more updated. But on the whole I would recommend.
Shot a wedding there and I found it to be a very pleasant location! Staff was super friendly, food was delicious and the views of the water (Shelter Island Sound) were just amazing with some really beautiful sunset! Would definitely love to capture more weddings at that location! Images cane be seen @ bernardalexisphotos
Rip off, don t try the BBQ night on Wednesday s, nothing to eat, and looong lines for burnt burgers and clams full of sands not clean , my girl had a diarrhea from the seafood, thanks God I ate only burned meat , the hotel is soo old 400 dollar per night for 1926 Un renovated hotel , u can t control the hot water during the shower,
The venue is a great location but that's about all it has to offer. If you actually need a good nights rest you will need to drop the extra cash on a private cabin. In the main rooms you can hear every noise in the hallway and listen to conversations crystal clear from two rooms away. Two ladies at the front desk were rude as well. Not everyone who visits the north fork understands that after labor day the hotel goes to a skeleton crew and many extras, that shouldn't be extras, are boarded up, including the bar. There is no reason to be rude about it. I also asked them if we needed to check out because we were leaving at 6 am. They said yes and that somebody would be at the desk that early. There was nobody there. A member of the housekeeping team told us to leave our keys on the desk because nobody was around.
We ate at the restaurant. The service was very slow and the menu is very limited. We had muscles and they were served cold and weren't really great. Salmon dish was okay and chicken dish also was okay. The view from the restaurant is spectacular too bad the service wasn't better and the food.
Went for lunch Saturday August 18, 2018. 1:30pm reservation. Long line for ferry. Called to say we will be about 10 minutes late. No problem, seated us inside next to window. Very humid outside. We were thrilled. Greeted warmly, relaxed atmosphere, very attentive staff, helpful with suggestions. Food was fresh an delicious. Looking forward to going back. I was also happy to see local wines on the menu. UPDATE: made reservations for August 28 through August 30. 3 glorious days in 90 degree sunny weather. Pool was refreshing, a little salty. Went for a 2 hour bike ride around Shelter Island. If you go next summer, don't miss the Wednesday nite barbq. Amazing, not just buyers and dogs. Fresh grilled tuna, clams, mussels, ribs etc. The staff is young, but so nice and accommodating. We had a studio cottage facing the wster.
I am in the midst of a lovely holiday at the Pridwin with my mother. Perfect place for the family! We took advantage of the bikes on site and plan on kayaking tomorrow. Staff is kind and helpful and the food is deliteful. Cannot wait to return.
Went for July 4th BBQ dinner. As I imagine this is not the first year, I would have expected better organization, more consistent food supply, & shorter lines. Food was good but at $45/ person, waiting 35 minutes to get to the buffet only to find some food selections waiting for restocking was not acceptable. Nice setting but I won't be back.
Attempted to get in touch with an events manager multiple times here over the past 2 weeks and was never able to reach someone. I had left voicemails and emails and messages with the rude front desk attendants and never got anywhere. Very sad was looking forward to possibly having our event there.
Wayyy too over priced for the quality of the rooms. It is nice, but not nice enough to charge what they do. I guess your paying for location. It is located on the shore, so when you walk out the front door, the boat dock and beach is right there. Plus they offer tennis courts, bike riding, and a lounge area for the kids. I was there for a wedding, and there services are spectacular! It was a beautiful wedding and reception...but again, VERY VERY EXPENSIVE!
Came by with a group for dinner, due to the rain we couldn't sit outside but that was okay. Appetizers were delicious, including the ricotta dish. Main course was the strip steak, it was tasty and cooked to my request. The staff was very attentive and friendly.
Location is quite nice, but food was overpriced and not very good at all. Worst part was smoking was not restricted to any particular area and tables are extremely close (back to back) so we had smoke literally blowing in our faces the entire time. It not only ruined the food, but we couldn't even sit down at our table as we had an infant with us whom we didn't want exposed to the smoke. Staff basically told us it is what it is. The high price doesn't reflect the subpar food quality, the only alcoholic beverage included was Miller Lite. Would not go back.
One of my favorite spots on Shelter Island. A mist visit for the view alone plus the food is wonderful too! If you're on the island you make it a stop!
Great retro location with a fantastic view. If you are looking for a Catskills/Poconos type 1950 - 1970's taste of life on Long Island for a family camp excursion this is the place. We attended the 4th of July BBQ and the food & festivities were great.
We stayed two nights for an anniversary weekend and had a great time. We'll definitely Chinese back. The room was big and the hotel had a lot of charm.
Walking into this white majestic mansion on Shelter Island's hillside is like stepping back in time to the 30's. However, the amenities include everything you'd want for present day fun.
The Pridwin is where you lose track of time. It could be 1920 if you weren't noticing the hair styles, which is nice because I wanted to get away from all the craziness going on in the world. There is a restaurant attached with a glorious outdoor, covered deck that offers photograph-worthy views of colorful sunsets. They catch their own fish and I ve never had better. I swam in their giant pool, walked across the street to the bay to have occasional dips in the salt water, bicycled, met people at their Wednesday night barbecue (complete with live music), shot pool... and never had to leave the place! Damn, I wish I were there right now.
Partaking of the excellent buffet breakfast available to both guests of the hotel and non-guest walk-ins. Excellent view of the bay visible from balcony seating area.
Went there for their BBQ event night. View was spectacular, but the food was extremely lacking. The price was far above what it should be. The clams were sandy, the mussels were close to being a bit too old, the burgers had no cheese available, the shrimp weren't deveined or shelled. The Tuna came out cold in the middle, which means it was probably frozen when it was cooked. Their draft beer was only Miller Lite.
Very disappointed, considering the price. I would return for the view, but not for the food or service.
As a side note, the place is a smokers Haven, meaning my 9 month old nephew was exposed to a ridiculous amount of second hand smoke. After speaking with management, they said it was outside, so NY laws didn't apply. Fortunately, they do apply, this establishment is just clearly not following the law.
Stayed for a wedding. Staff was incredibly kind and went out if the way to try and make some special accommodations. Rooms were clean and pleasent. Food was delicious and it was an over all great event/venue/stay
Known for Wednesday night barbeque. Complete vacation resort on private beach. Waterfront dining and every water sport imaginable. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, Sunset Cocktails.
