Portland Works: A Community of Traditional and Modern Craftspeople
Portland Works is a community benefit society located in Sheffield, UK. It is home to a diverse group of traditional and modern craftspeople who work together to create unique and high-quality products. The building itself is one of the most important historic buildings in the UK, with a rich history dating back over 140 years.
The Portland Works building was originally built in 1879 as a cutlery factory. It was designed by architect John Webster for James Dixon & Sons, one of Sheffield's most famous cutlery manufacturers. Over the years, the building has been used for various purposes, including as an engineering works during World War II.
In 2013, Portland Works was saved from demolition by a group of local residents who formed a community benefit society to purchase and restore the building. Today, it is home to over 30 small businesses and craftspeople who work across a range of disciplines including metalwork, jewellery making, woodworking and ceramics.
One of the key features that sets Portland Works apart from other creative spaces is its commitment to preserving traditional craft skills while also embracing modern techniques and technologies. This means that visitors can see everything from hand-forged knives being made using traditional methods to state-of-the-art laser cutting machines being used to create intricate designs.
Another unique aspect of Portland Works is its strong sense of community. Members are encouraged to collaborate with each other on projects and share their knowledge and expertise with others. There are regular events held at the space such as open studios where visitors can meet the makers behind some truly exceptional products.
Portland Works also offers workshops for those interested in learning new skills or honing existing ones. These workshops cover everything from basic metalworking techniques through to advanced jewellery making skills using precious metals like gold or silver.
In addition to providing workspace for craftspeople, Portland Works also plays an important role in supporting local businesses more broadly. The building has a café on the ground floor which serves delicious food and drinks made using locally sourced ingredients. There is also a shop selling products made by Portland Works members, as well as other local makers.
Overall, Portland Works is an exceptional space that brings together traditional and modern craftspeople in a unique and inspiring environment. Its commitment to preserving traditional craft skills while embracing new technologies makes it an important part of Sheffield's creative community. Whether you're interested in learning new skills, supporting local businesses or simply admiring some truly beautiful products, Portland Works is definitely worth a visit.
