History

The history of Pipestone County dates back thousands of years when Native Americans used pipestone quarries for making pipes for ceremonial purposes. The quarries are still active today and attract visitors from all over the world who come here to witness this unique cultural heritage.

In 1857, Pipestone County was established as one of nine original counties in Minnesota Territory. The county was named after its famous red pipestone quarries which were considered sacred by Native Americans.
