People's Action: Building Grassroots Power for Change
People's Action is a national network of state and local grassroots power-building organizations that are dedicated to building the power of poor and working people in rural, suburban, and urban areas. The organization aims to win change through issue campaigns and elections.
The mission of People's Action is to create a society where everyone has access to affordable healthcare, quality education, clean air and water, safe neighborhoods, good jobs with fair wages, and a government that works for the people. The organization believes that by building grassroots power at the local level, it can create lasting change on a national scale.
People's Action was founded in 2016 as a merger between three organizations: National People’s Action (NPA), Alliance for a Just Society (AJS), and USAction. These three groups had been working together for years on issues such as economic justice, racial justice, environmental justice, healthcare reform, immigration reform, voting rights protection.
Today People's Action has over 40 member organizations across 30 states. These member organizations work together on issue campaigns such as Medicare For All or Green New Deal. They also work together during election cycles to support progressive candidates who share their values.
One of the key strategies used by People's Action is community organizing. This involves bringing people together around shared values or issues in order to build collective power. Community organizers work with individuals or groups within communities to identify common goals or concerns and then develop strategies for addressing them.
Another important strategy used by People's Action is direct action. This involves taking nonviolent actions such as protests or sit-ins in order to draw attention to an issue or demand change from those in power.
In addition to these strategies People’s action also uses digital organizing tools like social media platforms like Facebook Twitter Instagram etc., email marketing campaigns etc., which help them reach out more effectively with their message across different demographics including young voters who are more likely to be engaged online.
People's Action has been successful in achieving many victories over the years. For example, they played a key role in the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which expanded access to healthcare for millions of Americans. They have also been instrumental in passing minimum wage increases and paid sick leave laws at the state and local level.
In conclusion, People's Action is an organization that is dedicated to building grassroots power for change. Through community organizing, direct action, and digital organizing tools they are able to bring people together around shared values or issues in order to create lasting change on a national scale. With over 40 member organizations across 30 states, People's Action is well-positioned to continue making progress towards their goal of creating a society where everyone has access to affordable healthcare, quality education, clean air and water, safe neighborhoods, good jobs with fair wages and a government that works for the people.
