About Oregon department of fish and wildlife

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is a state agency responsible for the management and conservation of fish and wildlife resources in Oregon. The department was established in 1921, with the mission to protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

ODFW manages over 30 species of game fish, including trout, salmon, steelhead, bass, walleye, catfish, sturgeon, crappie, bluegill, perch among others. The department also manages over 80 species of non-game fish such as lamprey eels. In addition to managing fisheries resources in the state's rivers lakes streams ponds reservoirs estuaries bays oceans etc., ODFW also manages hunting opportunities for big game animals such as deer elk bear cougar pronghorn antelope bighorn sheep mountain goat etc.

The department has a team of biologists who conduct research on various aspects of fish and wildlife biology ecology behavior genetics habitat requirements population dynamics etc. This research helps inform management decisions that are aimed at ensuring sustainable populations of these resources.

ODFW works closely with other agencies such as the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), US Forest Service (USFS), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) among others to ensure that its programs are consistent with federal laws regulations policies guidelines etc.

In addition to managing fisheries resources ODFW also provides recreational opportunities for anglers hunters trappers birdwatchers hikers campers boaters kayakers rafters swimmers picnickers nature enthusiasts photographers artists writers educators students researchers scientists policymakers elected officials media outlets businesses nonprofits etc.

ODFW operates several hatcheries where it raises millions of juvenile fish each year which are then released into various water bodies throughout the state. These hatcheries play an important role in maintaining healthy populations of game non-game fishes especially those that have been impacted by habitat loss pollution climate change invasive species predation disease overfishing or other factors.

ODFW also conducts outreach education programs aimed at increasing public awareness about the importance value benefits challenges threats facing Oregon's natural resources.
