Oglebay Institute is a non-profit organization based in Wheeling, West Virginia that has been dedicated to promoting the arts for over 85 years. The institute offers a wide range of programs and events that cater to people of all ages and abilities, with the aim of fostering appreciation, expression, and discovery through the arts.
The History of Oglebay Institute
The Oglebay family was one of the most prominent families in Wheeling during the early 20th century. Earl W. Oglebay was a successful businessman who owned several companies in Wheeling. He was also an avid art collector who believed that everyone should have access to art education.
In 1930, Earl W. Oglebay donated his estate to the city of Wheeling with the stipulation that it be used as a public park and cultural center. The park became known as Oglebay Park while the cultural center became known as Oglebay Institute.
Since its inception, Oglebay Institute has been committed to providing high-quality arts education programs for people of all ages and abilities. Today, it continues this tradition by offering a wide range of classes, workshops, performances, exhibitions and other events throughout the year.
