Military veteran here. Attempted to adopt a cute kitten named Sparkler from the North Shore Animal League of America. After two long trips from upper Manhattan to Long Island and hours of my application and references being checked, here's what I got told:

My GI Bill and disability compensation didn't satisfy their "income" requirement for adoption purposes. Something about them knowing better than I how my money should be spent and that I didn't have gainful employment. This, coming from their "supervisor" (whom I never actually met), showed me that, from the top to the bottom, NSALA staff seem very naive and ignorant about how their system was designed to work--to have loving and clearly qualified individuals take sheltered animals into their homes and families.

It's a shame when people mistreat their pets or when stray animals end up getting euthanized because they have no place of care. So, I understand why adoption agencies even have an application process--to weed out potentially unfit owners. I really do get it. However, it's also a shame that my years of service to this country and ambition to pursue higher education is dismissed as "not gainful employment"; my sources of income are essentially being discriminated against because a bunch of teenagers and their mom have a very limited perspective on what it means to actually earn a living. I would not recommend adopting a pet from the North Shore Animal League, as it seems their mission is to turn away good candidates for adoption.

No thanks to NSALA, I currently provide a warm, loving home to a 5-month old kitten. She was rehomed from a nice lady who understood how to treat both pets and humans with respect. Go figure.

Our first adoption was at North Shore Animal League 33 yrs ago. We've adopted at other places since but went back to adopt just recently
I don't know why we went anywhere else. They are amazing! Staff is wonderful. Great selection. Clean facility. Had beautiful rooms to get to know the animals. They check your references right there before you can adopt. They walk through your animals medical record.
They also email to follow up with you. They have reasonable prices.

Just got our second dog from North Shore a few days ago, and boy am I glad we did. North Shore has some of the best selection I ve ever seen for dogs, both puppy and senior! I always go to North Shore thinking I won t see anything and coming back with a dog or wanting one really bad. It a so much better to rescue then buy a brand new puppy, and having owner both types I can promise it s the best way to go!

5 stars, and would highly recommend if your looking for a dog!!!

I adopted a kitten from north shore in august. Prior to adopting kitten I was told over and over that he would be best with a family with other cats. I have two other cats so I was excited to hear this. The first day I bought the kitten home he was very territorial and over the next two months it did not get any better but worst. My cats were experiencing signs of depression having the kitten around. I tried to contact north shores behavioral specialist for 3 weeks!!! With no response until I threatened to return the kitten. The behavioral specialist had little to say about kittens behavior and suggested to just return him! I finally went today to return the kitten and the service from staff was very poor with little sympathy for the detachment process I would be going through to bring kitten back because they failed to evaluate him correctly. I would never recommend north shore and would never come back here to adopt another pet.

It is a Sunday afternoon and we find a malnourished kitten of around 3-4 weeks with blue eyes. I wanted to keep him, but we already have 3 cats we rescued. I don't mind of course, but my crabby grandmother who owns the house says no... To a kitten!
I panic.
My mom and I call everywhere, even our own vet we have been seeing for over 10 years, who won't even refer us to anyone! No one wants to take him...
I then get customer service for this hospital, praying that they will have an answer for me! I am told that if they are able, they will call back...
Miraculously, I get a call back within 25 minutes!
So, I bring Duffy (which I named after a cat in a movie that Rifftrax did called "A Talking Cat?"), the vets came in to examine him and took Duffy to be adopted. They ran blood tests on him (he is perfectly healthy) and with a small fee, Duffy is off to hopefully soon be adopted by someone who will give him lots of love!
I am also switching vets for how I was treated by mine!

Call for Duffy!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH, ESPECIALLY TO THE DEDICATED CSR, KATIE (WHO MANAGED EVERYTHING), AND EVERYONE WHO HELPED!

As a child, we got our first family dog from North Shore ..and she was the greatest family dog you could hope for .so in 2009 when my girlfriend and I were considering a dog, working with North Shore was a no brainer.

We were lucky enough that they had an adoption event in NYC, and we fell in love with a little beagle mix that we named Baxter.

Last week, we celebrated Baxters 12th Birthday and hoping he outlives me as I can t lose this little guy.

If you re looking to adopt a dog or cat, go to North Shore. So many wonderful animals to choose from!

Found an injured cat and thought North Shore would be a kind place to bring it in for care. Apparently they do not take in strays, so don t bother bringing any animals to their facilities. If you do, you will be treated as if you are abandoning the animal. After speaking to other rescues in the area, it sounds like North Shore just cares about donations. Sort of a glorified pet store using the No kill as a badge of honor. Transferring animals from other regions to sell for donations is a nice thing to do, but local shelters do the same without famous endorsements. Maybe if they were compassionate, they would take in injured animals from the public in a new facility they could build with their 33 million a year in donations. Check local shelters before donating to this place, what a scam.

My cat was very very ill as a kitten, other veterinarians turned us away because they didn t understand what had to be done. A couple blood transfusions later, north shore had saved his life. He s going on 10 years now!! Very intelligent technicians/doctors. They know what they re doing. And at such an affordable rate.

I go to the animal league to drop off donations. You can leave much needed towels and blankets there on the outside chairs in the parking lot. I even left a quilted sleeping bag with a flannel inside. It can be opened out or could be a great bed for a dog. Also carriers are great if you don't need yours anymore.
