Military veteran here. Attempted to adopt a cute kitten named Sparkler from the North Shore Animal League of America. After two long trips from upper Manhattan to Long Island and hours of my application and references being checked, here's what I got told:
My GI Bill and disability compensation didn't satisfy their "income" requirement for adoption purposes. Something about them knowing better than I how my money should be spent and that I didn't have gainful employment. This, coming from their "supervisor" (whom I never actually met), showed me that, from the top to the bottom, NSALA staff seem very naive and ignorant about how their system was designed to work--to have loving and clearly qualified individuals take sheltered animals into their homes and families.
It's a shame when people mistreat their pets or when stray animals end up getting euthanized because they have no place of care. So, I understand why adoption agencies even have an application process--to weed out potentially unfit owners. I really do get it. However, it's also a shame that my years of service to this country and ambition to pursue higher education is dismissed as "not gainful employment"; my sources of income are essentially being discriminated against because a bunch of teenagers and their mom have a very limited perspective on what it means to actually earn a living. I would not recommend adopting a pet from the North Shore Animal League, as it seems their mission is to turn away good candidates for adoption.
No thanks to NSALA, I currently provide a warm, loving home to a 5-month old kitten. She was rehomed from a nice lady who understood how to treat both pets and humans with respect. Go figure.
