I went from being able to say almost nothing to being very comfortable speaking and having conversations in Japanese with my Japanese friends and strangers during my 9 months in Japan while studying at this school. I took the N4 wishing I had signed up for N3, as it was too easy. I can not say that for everyone who was there for the same time frame as me. If you re not ready to put work in, this school will keep going and it will not slow down for you. This is the Japanese way and it might just be the country that will not bow to laziness. I spent hours out of class studying every day and made every effort to make Japanese friends to continue using Japanese almost constantly, and it helped so much. I do not know if I would have had the same results had I not done so much work outside the classroom.
For the most part, the grammar and things we learn are useful in conversation. There are, like any class that follows a textbook, definetly things we learnt that Japanese would find unnatural. The perk of living in Japan while learning is your Japanese friends will help you with this.
The school is for the most part supportive and friendly and very helpful for things involving life in Japan. Many students did feel disregarded by the school in terms of the course though. The kanji tests are incessant and the test s kanji are not really taught so much in class. Many complained that the homework was too much. Not a problem if you re a hard worker. My problem was with placement. The teachers are always hearing you speak and use Japanese, yet when new semesters come around your class placement is ENTIRELY based on test scores. I spent my last 3 months feeling like I had wasted my money in a mind numbingly slow paced class. There were many others with complaints about being misplaced or class size suddenly becoming too large. Starting from the new semester I would definitely not give 4 star review.
As for location. It s great! The school is located in the heart of Kyoto city. The HEART. I had the time of my life, having access to all the excitement of downtown Kyoto just as school was over, and relaxing at Kamo river. It s really fun and convenient.
School is pretty penny pinching. Wouldn t use the AC until June, no WiFi, and the textbooks we received never came near breaking even with the textbook fee. At one point they told us if we wanted a textbook we had to buy it from them! The students the semester before had received it. The textbook fee never changed. Ridiculous.
The school also does many trips and activities. The cost isn t the best but also not terrible. I went to most and they were pretty fun, especially the ski trip.
Do I recommend this school? Yes and no.
Do you want to learn Japanese and are willing to put actual work and effort into learning this language?
Go for it. Make Japanese friends while you re at it and have the time of your life outside of school, you can.
Do you want to go to Japan to have fun and see this school as your visa to Japan?
Go find somewhere else to waste you and everyone s else's time.
