New Canadians Centre: Supporting Newcomers to Become Full and Equal Members of Canadian Society
The New Canadians Centre (NCC) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to supporting immigrants, refugees, and other newcomers to become full and equal members of Canadian society. The NCC provides community leadership to ensure cultural integration in a welcoming community.
The NCC was established in 1979 as a response to the growing number of immigrants settling in Peterborough, Ontario. Since then, the organization has grown significantly and now serves over 1,500 clients annually from more than 100 countries.
The mission of the NCC is to empower newcomers by providing them with the tools they need to succeed in Canada. This includes access to language training, employment services, housing support, health care information, legal advice and more.
One of the key programs offered by the NCC is language training. The organization offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults at all levels of proficiency. These classes are designed not only to improve language skills but also help newcomers integrate into Canadian society by teaching them about Canadian culture and customs.
Another important program offered by the NCC is employment services. The organization works closely with local employers to help connect newcomers with job opportunities that match their skills and experience. This includes resume writing workshops, job search assistance and interview preparation.
In addition to these programs, the NCC also offers housing support for newcomers who are struggling with finding affordable housing options in Peterborough. The organization works closely with landlords and property managers throughout the city to help connect clients with safe and affordable housing options.
Health care information is another important service provided by the NCC. Many newcomers may be unfamiliar with Canada's health care system or may have difficulty accessing health care due to language barriers or lack of knowledge about available resources. The NCC provides information on how new residents can access health care services including doctors' offices, hospitals, and clinics.
Legal advice is also available through the NCC. Many newcomers may have questions about their legal rights or may need assistance with immigration issues. The organization provides access to legal professionals who can provide guidance and support.
The NCC is committed to ensuring that newcomers feel welcome in Peterborough and are able to fully participate in Canadian society. The organization works closely with local community groups, businesses, and government agencies to promote cultural integration and diversity.
