I recently spoke to a representative that went by the name of Evelyn and they were very rude and dismissive of me and my mother. My mom called inquiring about a certification that we may need but she doesn t speak much English. When Evelyn picked up the phone she can be heard loudly chewing and asked us with an unwelcoming tone if she could help us with anything. My mother proceeded to ask her in Spanish if we could be transferred to a Spanish speaking representative and we were turned down and told that she (Evelyn) was the only one that spoke Spanish in the entire building. She then failed to effectively communicate with my mother which is when I intervened. I asked Evelyn to just speak English and I would serve as a translator. Evelyn very clearly was either annoyed or embarrassed because she hung up the phone on me after letting out a loud yawn as if she could care less. Ive also emailed them with this exact review because that was extremely upsetting.

I scheduled to meet with a counselor back in March...

I scheduled to meet with a counselor back in March. She sent me an email confirming my appointment, but it was missing a lot of details. However, she failed to update my appointment in the online portal which would have sent an email with all of the info that I needed. I called the office prior to my meeting, and the receptionist could not locate my appointment as well. Therefore I had no way of knowing if it was a phone or in office appointment. The housing counselor called me at my scheduled appointment time. She stated she could not meet with me because I hadn't completed all of the paperwork and consent forms. However, I did. I had automated emails confirming it and I could also view my signed docs in the docusign portal. After going back and forth with her for a few minutes, my document magically disappeared and she sent me a new email for a signature. We continued with the meeting and she gave me very general information. She kept referencing programs that I knew I didnt qualify for because I had researched them. Based upon the details I provided to her during our convo, she should have known I didn't qualify for said programs. I feel like it was a wasted meeting. The next day she sent me an email through their online portal confirming my appointment that had already taken place. This email should have been sent prior to the meeting as it had info that I needed to know prior to us meeting. I guess it was automatically sent once she updated my online profile with the counseling session. She was supposed to send me some "assignments" and schedule an April meeting; that has yet to happen. I'm just letting it fall to the wayside. I have done my own research and will work with banking lenders directly. I'm not sure if this is how all of the housing counselors operate, but this was my experience.

Update- it has been 4 months since my meeting and I just received the promised follow up call today. I informed the counselor that I am no longer interested in their service. I deleted all of my docs from their portal.

An amazing experience with NHS when buying my first property. It was a seemless process. From beginning searching to closing it took me three months to close. They guide you through every step that needs to take place. Come prepared and they will work hard with you evey step along the way. Kimberly Adams was amazing to work with and I would work with her again for my next purchase.

If I could give 0 stars I would. This has been the worst part of my first time home buying experience. Hammond, IN requires a home buyers course, but only has limited in-class sessions so I had to take one online. Upon completing the course I was then notified that I had to do a 1 hour counseling session with NHS. I have called them approximately 10 times in the past 3 weeks. I have left voice-mails with one call back that resulting in absolutely no help at all. I have sent emails with no response back. They do not answer the phone. I receive automated emails from them with "Appointment reminders" for appointments I haven't signed up for and they arrive 5-10 mins after the "appointment" they are reminding you about. I have scheduled the phone counseling which resulted in no call from them. NO CALL NO SHOW. What kind of place is this! Does anyone work here?! They are supposed to be there to help make the process easier and less stressful and this has only made my experience horrible and the most stress I have ever had. This is holding up my closing and I can't even get a hold of anyone to remedy it. Get it together people. I just want my certificate. I paid for the class, I took it, I am past all of this nonsense, and honestly I wouldn't even trust their counseling advice at this point anyway. If you can STAY FAR AWAY FROM THEM!

Definitely do the homebuyer seminar ( I went to Kane County and it was excellent) but I wouldn't do counseling without verifying credentials. Based on the 'introduction' email after signing up for financial counseling at the Chicago north location: There was no introduction in the body of the email and no signature line with name and title and contact information of the person I'm supposed to give my Social Security Number, bank statements and financial info for counseling. I just don't do business like that. How do I know who you are?
