National Gallery of Australia

A great place to visit when your looking for a bit of a relax or there is an exhibit you ve been interested in. There is underground parking which is great for hot days when you need shade. The food in the cafeteria is of a higher standard than one might expect, it was really good and had lots of flavour. I plan on visiting again soon.

Good artwork and very interesting displays from all over

If you have more than 1 day take it in stages there is lots to see. If you live in Canberra it's worth becoming a member and going to the members only opportunities.

Allow yourself one whole day, or maybe two, to experience the gems which the NGA has to offer. Look up, look down, ponder, reflect and make time to be mesmerised.

I visited the NGA over the weekend and was thoroughly surprised by the size of their collection. They have a large range of artworks and I was impressed by their selection of Aboriginal Art. The Matisse & Picasso exhibit was well worth the visit; it was very informative and had a huge selection of artworks on display.

Easy to view and follow a logical order through the gallery. Always a worthwhile exhibition to see.

It s the NATIONAL GALLERY OF AUSTRALIA.Expect everything and learn anything

Love this place. We were fortunate enough to catch one of the gallery's many outstanding exhibitions recently (Hyper Real). I highly recommend this institution to anyone visiting our capital.

Some great art but the architecture is quite plain, like many of the attractions in Canberra.

A great collection, especially of Australian art. It's currently exhibiting Xu Zhen who does interesting pastiches.

We entered via the footbridge from the portrait gallery but when we went to leave they had inexplicable locked off that exit forcing us to walk the long way back. Very inconvenient and with no explanation. Loved the art and how many great works on paper there was

Great museum and great staff, saw Cartier exhibition here, just simply AMAZING! We were blow away. Highly recommended!

Lovely place to spend a few hours and endulge in local art and history...nice cafe inside as well.

I keep using the footpath between the NGA and lake Burley Griffin. The gardens are always a cool relief

Staff are friendly enough, but as far as it goes when you need to have plumbing repairs done, they are a bit slow to get to the job.

Nice place to just roam. Love the collection of art.

The layout of the place is pretty terrible which means you have to walk back and forth quite a bit. There's a lot of sculpture and sort of modern "protest art" which does nothing for me. I really liked the Australian landscapes and there's a surprisingly large, and impressive selection of photography compared to other galleries I've been to, although it annoys me that they label their silver gelatin prints as "gelatin silver photographs". Also I think they could improve the lighting as it caused a lot of reflection on the glass in front of some of the artworks.

Love this place. Different art and styles. I had the best time there and couldn t believe it was free.

Fabulous exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite painting (Love and Desire). Works that have never been seen in Australia before and show the full range of the movement s subjects. I really liked the depiction of real people with real faces and the active women.

A stunning collection of contemporary and classic art. The architecture of the building lend itself to quiet reflection on the art pieces. The sculpture park is another highlight. The coffee shop though buried deep in the building offers good food and drink. Spend an hour or a day. It is worth every moment.

Great icon Staff are very friendly and helpful, even the security guards. The displays are well thought out and inviting. Great place to explore and enjoy. Warm welcoming atmosphere. Nice place to spend a few hours or even just to pop in and cherry pick what you are interested in. Should be part of everyone's visit to Canberra.

Excellent gallery, worth a visit a couple of times a year!

A large amount of old and modern art presented well and a nice cafe to have a break afterwards. The outdoor artwork is incredible - the James Turrell skyspace is especially impressive and worth seeing.

The National Gallery has something for everyone. They have collections from world renowned artists and others who are just emerging. Modern art combined with more traditional formsof indigenous artwork. The sculpture garden us great too. Worth spending a but of time here, especially if you have kids. They children's section downstairs will keep them interested for hours. Lots of craft and activities.

I love the National Gallery! An interesting and diverse collection. Great way to spend a lazy day and you can enjoy a good cup of coffee or delicious lunch at the cafe too.

If your expecting something like the Treyakov in Russia like I was you will be deeply dissapointed. Unfortunately 90% of the art is just weird stuff that looks like kids have done it at school. Not much outstanding creativity, and my whole family was just bored. I did not enjoy at all but if your into that kind of stuff you may really enjoy it because art is a personal thing.

Interesting exhibition. Love the art works from the Chinese artist Xu Zhen

I took my 3 and 9 year old here and wow, it didn't disappoint. I was worried they might be too noisy for an art gallery and we'd be asked to leave.....but all the staff we encountered could not have been more inviting and welcoming....if only some of the stuffy old visitors were so welcoming.... We didn't do a tour but spoke to a lot of the security guards around the venue whom were all extremely welcoming and embraced our kids interest in the artworks. All we encountered were extremely knowledgeable, friendly staff who were more than happy to discuss the works with our kids and when we left, we all left with a far greater understanding than we had begun with!

Enjoyed the exhibit although much smaller than I expected.

Sadly closed when visiting Canberra, but plenty to see throughout the grounds.

Truly wonderful way to spend a day in Canberra - and it's free! Beautiful new building, huge collection of art of all styles, ages and cultures. Well worth a visit. Photos are allowed.

A journey through the history of Western and local indigenous art

Really nice collection but the place is a little awkward to navigate. The Australian art section could do better with more signages. Maps will surely help too. The James Turrell installation 'Within Without' is a must see.

An absolutely beautiful place, with thought provoking works.

Second time here to see the Matisse and Picasso exhibition after attending the Monet exhibition last year. A great experience both times.

Love the National Gallery. A must to visit in Canberra. The Cartier Exhibition is exquisite.

Nice building and art works, but not an extensive collection.

Although it's not the easiest place to get to, the NGA is worth the effort. The main collection houses some famous artworks that I was genuinely surprised to find out that we (Australia) own. Highlights include Picasso, Pollock, Monet, Dali, Braques, Delaunay and others. And the upcoming Turner exhibition is something to look forward to.

Well it's nabbed Blue Poles, what more could be said! A Lakeside smorgasbord of Art to convince even the most stubborn bogan.

Love coming back here for the new exhibitions or even just to see favorites from the permanent collection.
