A truly amazing collection of art (comparable to the great art museums of Europe). I particularly loved the impressionist and post-impressionist exhibitions (Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, van Gogh etc). To experience all the art I estimate that you need at least 5 hours. Entrance is free.

There is one location that is at the cross of the galleries where a collection is on display called the Voyage if Life by Thomas Cole. Each time I go to the museum, it has seemed to be at a different point in my life. When I was a baby, I cried because I didn't understand things and I needed things, and was guided and cared for. When I became a man, I cried at the joy of getting married and having a child, and had every hope in store. As I became older I cried as I watched my marriage crumble to a state of ill repair and the uncertainty of what world I have brought my child into. Perhaps I will discover the peace that the forth painting in the series suggest awaits for us, that I have made it through the roughness and that it was all necessary and good, and that throughout it all I was guided and cared for, as I now do for my son. And, there will be no more tears. Perhaps I can be as the guiding angel for my son that he should not wreck in the tempest of life, and be delivered from its perils. These pictures move me so
Really enjoyed the political cartoons exhibit and some of the more permanent collections as well. It was a great way to get out of the rain for a bit. To top it off, it was completely free! There's an app that can serve as a bit of a guide as well.
Absolutely enjoyed looking at the gallery. There were amazing paintings, sculptures, and furniture. You have to see the gallery in person because some of the paintings are gigantic.
An amazing collection of some of the worlds finest art, set in a structure worthy of their display. A few hours is enough to spend walking through the gallery. Be sure not to miss the sculptures near the east end of the main building. They are mesmerizing.
I could spend days in this gallery They have an amazing amount of work and I want to see every piece. Unfortunately, unless you just walk by it, its impossible to do in one day.
We went particularly to see the Cezanne portrait show...a Cezanne which was completely unknown to me but well worth the trip. if. After browsing through the older masters we tunneled to the new building to enjoy the rothkes, the Pollacks, the Calders, the Lichtensteins, the Warhols. and many more. And all free of charge. Hope that Donald doesn't sell it off to the highest bidder. (Or the best friend )
It's incredibly easy to lose an entire day wandering the halls of the National Gallery of Art. With a sculpture garden and two buildings, East (Modern/Contemporary Art) and West (Classical) there's so much to explore.
In addition to their phenomenal selection of art, the buildings themselves are works of art. West features sky-lit sculpture halls and garden courts inside its Neoclassic architecture, and East hosts a breathtaking, soaring atrium, repeating triangle motifs, and innovative marble panel cladding.
The two buildings are connected by the magical "Concourse" which runs under 4th street and contains the 200 foot light sculpture, 'Multiverse' by Leo Villareal. The Concourse also houses a gift shop and the serene Cascade Cafe--named for its unique underground view of a waterfall feature on the street--which offers a variety of refreshments and is a wonderful lunch destination.
With so much grandeur and no admission cost, the National Gallery of Art is definitely a must-see on any trip to DC.
The National Gallery never fails to offer a wonderful visual experience. This time we visited old favorites in the early Italian renaissance collection, the impressionists, and a special exhibit of Cezanne's portraits, plus a small temporary exhibit of how the new availability of images in print in the renaissance allowed for sharing in other media, most often pottery (majolica).
The two gardens offer a calm oasis, a good place to meet or simply catch your breath.
What a good museum, super interesting art collection that has. A pity not having more time to enjoy it. And to put the icing on ... it's free. Do not miss it if you like to see painting and sculpture.
Beautiful, wonderful gallery to visit on the DC mall. It's overwhelming, the collection is almost impossible to take in all in one day. Highly recommended.
The National Mall museums are free and all are worth knowing them well, so it is important to have time, because they are unique works and of great historical and artistic value. Do not stop entering any of them.
I can't think of any other place except Paris where you can view, up close, the works of so many masters. Breathtaking, spectacular works of art. Loved it.
My youngest daughter (21) and I went in March for her Spring Break (college). She wanted to see the National Gallery of Art because she s more into it than I am. But I ll admit I really enjoyed the gallery. The paintings were breathtaking and I felt like I was Ferris Bueller on his day off! I seriously enjoyed all the aspects of this place. I loved the spiritual peace I felt being in there looking at the different pieces and paintings. We Han a beautiful mid-morning, waltzing around the gallery
Hard to describe standing right in front of Rembrandts, Renoirs, Van Goghs, Monets etc. We were bummed that there were only oil paintings. No water colors, no pencils, no charcoal, etc.
The National Gallery of Art, and its attached Sculpture Garden, is a national art museum in Washington, D.C., located on the National Mall, between 3rd and 9th Streets, at Constitution Avenue NW
Oh MY Goodness, AMAZING, WONDERFUL!!! We saw the only DaVinci in this hemisphere....! Van Gogh, Monet, Raphael, Cook, Cezanne....amazing....can't walt to see the rest of the displays on our next visit. The staff was very knowledgeable about the artists, the art and locations ....
The exhibits are phenomenal. Parking isn't the best, but can be found. There's an after hours display that can be signed up for, I highly recommend it. The after hours is mainly for the adult crowd as there is drinking allowed.
Excellent place to relax and leasurely learn about the past through pictures, sculptures, and artworks. Good food and gift stores downstairs. Great place
This place was huge! It wasn't right for my kids at this age but it had an incredible display of art. It was staggering just how much art was there. Rooms upon rooms. You could spend an entire day there and not see everything. This museum was clean, well organized, and hospitable staff. Thank you for a great experience.
