About National cowboy & western heritage museum

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is a renowned institution located in Oklahoma City, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history, art, and culture of the American West. With its extensive collection of artifacts, artworks, and exhibits spanning over 28 acres of land, the museum offers visitors an immersive experience that celebrates the spirit of the West.

Founded in 1955 as the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum by Chester A. Reynolds, a prominent oilman and philanthropist from Oklahoma City, the museum has since evolved into one of America's premier cultural institutions. In 1960, it was renamed as The National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center to reflect its growing scope beyond just cowboys to include all aspects of western life.

In 1989, it was again renamed as The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum to better reflect its mission to preserve not only cowboy history but also Native American culture and other aspects that make up western heritage. Today it stands as a testament to Reynolds' vision for preserving this unique part of American history.

The museum's collection includes over 28 galleries featuring more than 2000 works of art from some of America's most celebrated artists such as Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Visitors can explore exhibits on cowboy life including rodeo events like bull riding or barrel racing; Native American culture with displays on traditional clothing or beadwork; firearms used by cowboys during their travels across vast expanses; wagons used for transportation during westward expansion; plus much more!

One exhibit that stands out is "The Enduring Legacy: Oil Patch Warriors," which honors those who worked in Oklahoma's oil fields during World War II when they were called upon by their country to help fuel war efforts overseas.

Another popular exhibit is "The American Rodeo: Photographs by Louise Serpa," which showcases photographs taken by Serpa between 1951-1972 at various rodeos throughout America capturing moments that define this iconic sport.

Visitors can also enjoy interactive experiences such as simulated horseback rides through scenic landscapes or virtual reality tours exploring different parts of western heritage like ghost towns or cattle drives.

In addition to its impressive collection and exhibits, The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum hosts several events throughout the year including an annual Rodeo Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony honoring those who have made significant contributions towards advancing rodeo sports worldwide.

Overall The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in learning about America's rich western heritage. Its extensive collection combined with interactive experiences makes it an ideal place for families looking for educational entertainment while visiting Oklahoma City.
