It is a fundamental institution to soil research which has great implications to agriculture. National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning under Indian Council of Agricultural Research did a mammoth and fundamental task of studying and classifying soils of India in 1956 and made it comprehensive and comparable to United States Department of Agriculture's soil Taxanomy.

NBSS&LUP is engaged in Land Resource Inventorization of India. It is situated in front of NRC Citrus in Nagpur. It has five regional centers.
