How did you become you? is an educational program offered by Empathy Education International under the name My Autoethnography. It provides a free, browser-based exercise in which users answer twelve questions to examine their personal history in context, exploring factors such as family, place, language, culture, opportunity, loss, work, faith, and the decisions of themselves and others. The program distinguishes an autoethnography from a traditional autobiography by emphasizing the contexts that shaped a person's experiences and by encouraging reflection on what the user wants to build, create, and leave behind. It is available in English and Spanish and is structured around a framework called the BIGSPEARs™. The site states that no account or sign-up is required and that nothing users write is retained.
