About Municipal Water District of Orange County
The Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) is a leading water agency that has been serving the residents of Orange County, California since 1933. MWDOC is responsible for managing and replenishing the region's groundwater basin, ensuring water reliability and quality, preventing seawater intrusion, and providing water to over 2.5 million people in Orange County.
MWDOC's mission is to provide reliable and high-quality water supply to its customers while promoting conservation and sustainability. The agency achieves this by implementing innovative technologies and practices that help conserve water resources while meeting the growing demand for clean drinking water.
One of MWDOC's key initiatives is its Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), which is the largest indirect potable reuse project in the world. The GWRS takes highly treated wastewater that would otherwise be discharged into the ocean and purifies it using advanced treatment processes such as microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light disinfection. The purified water is then injected into the groundwater basin where it undergoes natural filtration before being pumped out as drinking water.
MWDOC also operates a state-of-the-art Water Education Center (WEC) that provides educational programs on various topics related to water conservation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. The WEC offers interactive exhibits, tours of MWDOC facilities, classroom presentations for students K-12th grade as well as adult groups.
In addition to its local efforts towards sustainable management of natural resources like groundwater basins in Orange County California; MWDOC has also gained international recognition for its leadership role in promoting sustainable practices worldwide through partnerships with other organizations such as United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
MWDOC has received numerous awards for its innovative approaches towards sustainable management of natural resources including being named "Agency of the Year" by American Water Works Association (AWWA) in 2018.
Overall, Municipal Water District of Orange County stands out among other agencies due to their commitment towards providing reliable high-quality drinking-water supply while promoting conservation & sustainability through innovative technologies & practices which have earned them international recognition & numerous awards making them an industry leader not just locally but globally too!
