Awesome park!!!!! Easy to find a private spot and chill
The cemetery is a botanical treasure. It is amazingly well kept and signs let you know what you are looking at. School art classes stop in to draw, locals and visitors enjoy strolling the grounds for the flora and/or famous folks buried here. Walk up the tower for a great workout and fab view of he city.
We went on a leaf-peeping tour called Awash in Color on Nov. 3rd, 2019 and Jim was our guide. I had never been on any sort of leaf-peeping situation so had no idea what to expect and was basically just along for the ride. Jim made the experience SO amazing, not only because of his passion but also his extensive breadth of knowledge. He is also kind and was open to all kinds of questions. I am so glad I went and can't say enough how much I enjoyed the experience. I was one of the youngest on the tour (at age 35) and have never taken an interest in plants or trees but Jim made it so extremely interesting that now I'll never look at plants and trees again in the same way. I really appreciated the tour and REALLY appreciated Jim. Thanks so much, Jim and Mount Auburn Cemetery!
Wonderful, Beautiful place. My parents are buried here.
Beautiful during the fall. Graves date back to 1850s. Those people are resting at truly peaceful place.
One of the most spectacular, beautiful, and historic cemeteries you will find anywhere in the world. As a genealogist and family historian who has visited hundreds of cemeteries across three continents, this one is truly special. Be sure to have a paper map with you, not just your phone GPS. You can get one near the bathroom and little visitor center, just be sure to leave a little donation. There are many historic grave markers and it will take many hours to cover just a small portion of this expansive park like cemetery.
Mount Auburn Cemetery is the first rural, or garden, cemetery in the United States, located on the line between Cambridge and Watertown in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Boston. It is the burial site of many prominent members of the Boston Brahmins, as well being a National Historic Landmark.
Great hidden gem, with more history per square inch than most museums! Just remember it s still an active cemetery so be respectful...
This sprawling, lush, hilly cemetery was established back in the 1830s just as Americans were taking a more romantic, thoughtful approach to death and honoring their departed loved ones. It really reads more like a gorgeous public park, that happens to be packed with headstones and memorials, than a traditional cemetery. Be sure and visit the reception chapel and pick up a map, then make your way down Fountain Ave to Magnolia, then to Mountain, all the way up to the high granite tower overlooking the entire city.
Gorgeous landscaped hills
Beneath sweeping tower views
Momento mori
Beautiful paths, gorgeous gravestones and amazing, old trees. It is also an arboretum that is home to champion trees.
