Midway Village Museum: A Journey Through Time
Welcome to Midway Village Museum, an award-winning history museum located in Rockford, Illinois. Our 148-acre museum campus is home to a 13-acre Victorian-era village and a main museum center with 15,000 square feet of exhibition space. We are dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Rockford and the surrounding region.
Our Victorian-era village is a living history exhibit that takes visitors back in time to the late 1800s. The village features over two dozen historic buildings that have been restored and furnished with period-appropriate artifacts. Visitors can explore homes, businesses, schools, churches, and other structures from this fascinating era.
The main museum center houses our extensive collection of artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Rockford's past. Our exhibits cover a wide range of topics including industry, agriculture, transportation, military history, fashion and textiles, toys and games, sports and recreation, music and entertainment.
One of our most popular exhibits is "Trains: Tracks Through Time," which explores the impact that railroads had on Rockford's growth as an industrial hub in the late 19th century. Visitors can see historic locomotives up close as well as learn about how trains changed transportation forever.
Another highlight is "The Great War: World War I," which examines how this global conflict affected life in Rockford during the early part of the 20th century. This exhibit features artifacts such as uniforms worn by local soldiers who served overseas as well as letters they wrote home describing their experiences.
In addition to our permanent exhibits we also offer temporary exhibitions throughout the year on various topics related to local history. These rotating displays provide visitors with new insights into different aspects of Rockford's past.
At Midway Village Museum we are committed to making history come alive for visitors of all ages through engaging exhibits and interactive programming. We offer guided tours led by knowledgeable docents who bring each exhibit to life with stories about people who lived during these times.
We also host special events throughout the year such as our annual "World War II Days" reenactment weekend where visitors can experience what life was like for soldiers on both sides during this pivotal conflict.
